One of the defining tunes of EOMS.
A few weeks ago I initiated a thread called something like Exile as 1-Lp. The result of those posts might be quite interesting: Casino Boogie would become an outtake! The reasons why it is not favoured for a one-vinyl-lp are given. Many people are not aware that EOMS contains lots of Abkco songs too. If you drop these, only then you get Casino Boogie as a true Rolling Stones Records release.

to me Casino Boogie is what you get if you condense EOMS into one (part of ) song. Pretty good lead in to TD also in the casino genre. "Kissing cut in Cans"?? that is funny but I think I will stick with the traditional lyrics unless you can come up with a better source than your headphones

The "kissing cut" line is from the sheet music/song book.
I remember 'cause I had it (I may still, packed away somewhere).
Back then, you had to tidy up that stuff.
They did the same for Star Star (Starbucker).
I think Starbucker is much better, actually. Certainly gets you laughing.
I had the song book for Some Girls, too.
Can't remember if they edited the title song or not.

It's a good song, and they play it well, but I'm just not crazy about the sound, too thin and tinny for my tastes, which is how I feel about a lot of the songs on Exile. I'm always amazed by how many people love and come to the defense of almost every song and album by the Stones that's brought up on here. Even Dirty Work, a surprising amount stand up for that. I love the Rolling Stones, always have, they are almost always in my top 3 of all-time, and never leave the top 5. This is the only band forum I'm a member of, and I love this site, but I just can't "drink the kool-aid", so to speak, like some can. I wish I was one of those devout fans that like everything an artist does, but I'm not wired that way.

I have to agree with those who feel the lyrics are: "Kissing Cvnt in Cannes..." Firstly, I can hear him sing that as much as you can hear any of the lyrics on the album, which they purposely left muddy and low in the mix. Secondly, it makes sense, they are living in France, Mick is high society hob knobbing with the elite at the Cannes film fest. And researching the websites with lyrics, the first 25 sites I went to all have it as that lyric as well as the official sheet music.

That line is certainly the X-rated version.
I'm just saying the songbook I owned had it different.
I remember buying it, actually. I remember the store. The cover had the guy with the three balls in his mouth and the paper was pink. NOw that I think about it,
I don't remember if they kept the word "shit" in Sweet Virginia.
Maybe they kept that in. One word is more vulgar than the other.

Possibly the #1 never played live song by the Stones(Winter a close second). Not sure they really would do it justice if they tried. But great lyrics, fun rocking song.

I thought I tride to explain it when I wrote: "Secondly, it makes sense, nthey are living in France, Mick is high society hob knobbing with the elite at the Cannes film fest."

Whereas "...kissing cut in can..." doesn't seem to make as much sense. I can see how someone might think that is referring to a cut that is in the can, movie talk of stuff included or excluded from the final cut, and link that to the Deitrich movies line, but I think the link to their life styles, hence "Exile On Main Street" theme is move compelling of a link to "kissing cvnt in Cannes..."

I guess I still don't see what "cvnt" has to do with high society hobnobbing? or kissing it... do you mean like kissing ass? It would certainly seem dishonest to trash the people you choose to hang out with, regardless of their class, but on the rest of the album the lifestyle they pretend to have is more low-down or down-home, even working-class--you know, sh!t-on-the-shoes, torn and frayed, nitty-gritty, turd-running, etc.--so maybe this is actually more honest. If it does to refer to the international jet set.

No it is in reference to the excessive sex life they were all experiencing and having oral sex at the Cannes film fest. It is a carry on of the theme of Exiles, a dubauched lifestyle of excess, life on the road being an international playboy, and having tons of sex with the upper crust socialites. Star Star baby!

According to Keno:

CASINO BOOGIE
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

No good, can't speak, wound up, no sleep.
Sky diver insider her, skip rope, stunt flyer.
Wounded lover, got no time on hand.
One last cycle, thrill freak Uncle Sam.
Pause for bus'ness, hope you'll understand.
Judge and jury walk out hand in hand.
Dietrich movies, close up boogies,
Kissing @#$%& in Cannes.

Grotesque music, million dollar sad.
Got no tactics, got no time on hand.
Left shoe shuffle, right shoe muffle,
Sinking in the sand.
Fade out freedom, steaming heat on,
Watch that hat in black.
Finger twitching, got no time on hand.

I just wanted to see if the system censored this one. It does, and its kind of funny.

@#$%&
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Baby, baby, I've been so sad since you've been gone
Way back to New York City
Where you do belong
Honey, I miss your two-tone kisses
Legs wrapped around me tight
If I ever get back to Fun City, girl
I'm gonna make you scream all night

Honey, honey, call me on the telephone
I know you're movin' out to Hollywood
With your can of tasty foam
All those beat up friends of mine
Got to get you in their books
Lead guitars and movie stars
Get their tongues beneath your hood

Yeah! You're a star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star
Yeah, a star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star
A star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star

Yeah, I heard about you Polaroid's
Now that's what I call obscene
Your tricks with fruit was kind a cute
I bet it keep your pussy clean
Honey, I miss your two tone kisses
Legs wrapped around me tight
If I ever get back to New York, girl
Gonna make you scream all night

Yeah! You're a star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star
Yeah, a star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star
A star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star.... yes you are, yes you are, yes you are

Yeah, Ali McGraw got mad with you
For givin' head to Steve McQueen
Yeah, you and me, we made a pretty pair
Ballin' through the Silver Screen
Honey, I'm open to anything
I don't know where to draw the line
Yeah, I'll make bets that you're gonna get
John Wayne before he dies

Yeah! You're a star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star
Yeah, a star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star
A star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star
Yes you are
A star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star Yeah!
A star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star Oh yeah!
A star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star Woo!
A star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%&, star @#$%& star (yes you are)...,
@#$%& @#$%&, @#$%& @#$%& @#$%& yes you are, yes you are!... Oh yeah! Woo....

Oh-Yeah - Oh! Give us a kiss
With a twist
Ball me girl

about half the time i have no idea what the words mean on Stones songs, that's when i can even understand them. i once did the lead vocals in a Stones tribute type band, as a benefit for a local food-shelf, and a lot of the time i just made up lyric parts phoenetically!

i reckon Jaggers voice is a great instrument, what he's actually saying is of less importance than how it sounds.

Let's clear this up once and for all

The lyric is:

DIETRICH MOVIES, CLOSE UP BOOGIES, KISSING CUT IN CANS

CUT as in a film cut

and CANS as in film that is 'in the can'

It's not that other rather rude word that everybody seems to think it is

Just listen to it loud on headphones - you'll hear it is unmistakably CUT in CANS

The lyrics here have a a FILM feel to it i.e. CLOSE UP, GROTESQUE MUSIC, MILLION DOLLAR SAD, and has nothing whatever to do with that other rude 'word'

Cheers

Bollocks. You can hear Keith really emphesizing the "N" with a deliberate American gnarl to it -he clearly enjoyed singing that. It totally fits the rest of lyrics, and it's a common slang expression (even in Dutch).

And it's not a particularly rude word isn't? It's slang, but not rude. Unless you think a vagina is rude of course.

The Dutch word "Cut" doesn't exist. It would be "Kut" in Cans then.tongue sticking out smiley

Mathijs, the word c*nt is a much ruder word in American English than in Britain and on the continent. ìt''s more than just slang for vagina; it's the most obscenely profane word in the entire American lexicon.

That's why Oasis shocks Americans, as they use it in every other sentence in interviews and onstage.

thanks, whitem8, now I get it... I guess I really don't hear so many references in the Exile lyrics to a debauched rock star lifestyle and more to a fantasy of being a more run-of-the-mill rock and roll band than the Stones actually were by that point. Maybe it's just the rootsy arrangements, but for example I tend to visualize them playing the songs in small clubs & seedy bars rather than the arenas and posh studios that were their nonfictional venues. But the Cannes line does stand out that way... Zack. your post I guess implied the same points but didn't spell it out.

Ok, but I think if you listen and feel the vibe you get that concept of the Stones being exiles from their own country and painting the portrait of their lives...
"I only get my rocks of when I'm dreamin.."
"Women think I'm crazy, always tryin to waste me, make me burn my candle right down"
"Dressing rooms filled with parasites..."
"on stage the band has got problems..."
Tons of references, don't have the patience to list them all now, but I have always thought of the disc as the most autobiographical of their releases.

Indeed. In fact, when I read Brit mags like Mojo and Q and they're
interviewing Brit musicians, I'm always amazed how they use that word
left, right, and center, 'cause in the States it's a pretty offending word
and is usually avoided.

Yeah, it's something I would never understand of you Americans. The land of the free, but you can't say cvnt, fvck and nigger on national TV. Here in the Netherlands everybody is saying it BECAUSE it is rude.

Is cvnt really that profane in the US? How can there be such a difference between the US and Europe? We lovingly call our wives cvnts, while in the US you call them bitches -something profoundly obscene over here!
