My guess is that Jagger & Richards wanted a different bass sound when Bill left.
Don't you all think DJ couldn't copy Bills sound/style if he would??

no

I bet he can,believe me.

players aren't computer programs that can just be copied. wyman's inimitable timing and lyricism can't be duplicated by darryl nor anyone else.

Quote DJ:

"Instead of learning Bill Wyman's parts verbatim and then trying to sound like him, I learned the form of the songs and the general shape of the bass lines, and then I added my own interpretations."

D.J is a very modest musician.

Of course he's gonna say that but the fact is hes hired to play the bass lines Bill Wyman originated(at least up to 1989).

I agree with StonesTod.

Bill Wyman's style was a part of the Rolling Stones sound. Darryl Jones could copy the perfect bass lines, but can't fit in the Stones sound as Bill did.
I am talking about live sound, studio recordings is another subject.

Anyway, Keith and Charlie know exactly what was lost with Bill departure. Suddenly, they became a cover band, playing Stones greatest hits in a revival band also called The Rolling Stones.

I'am afraid that started way back in '75..

Darryl is a better bass player than Bill even if he had both hands tied behind his back. The only thing Bill had over Darryl is his sound.

I'll take Bills sound and playing over Darryl's any day, and I also have much respect for Darryl Jones. I want that Bill sound.

A few adjustments and the case is solved.
MJ& KR don't want that. You cannot blame DJ for it..
Same with Ron Wood.(Some different adjustments tough winking smiley)

i also think that dj could copy bw good enough if the rolling stones would want it.
the choice of instruments, sounds and style in my eyes is intented to be different from bill wyman, who could never play a jazz or precision bass because his hands are too small. but in all these dj years not even once i thought wow that was a cool bass part.

he does his job. no Darryl, no Stones tour. He can really play, and he likes them and they like him.
I always wonder how different the whole thing might have turned out with Joey Spampinato...

how would it be to have to audition a new bass player all over again at this point, if Darryl decided not to tour with them again? just saying he has provided a comfort level for Charlie certainly, and the band as a whole. Beginning that process again would be more difficult now than it was 17 years ago.

very hypothetical issue, though. darryl will never find a more lucrative sitch in his life.

true. I remember reading an interview with Darryl years ago, he said he had done some acting, and wanted to pursue that as well...

Agreed, he plays the bass quite well, but he is not a Stone, I think many of the long term fans still see Ronnie as the new guy, so anyone else will only ever be a hired player.

true but if they really wanted him to be a stone he would be by now

Personally I think his style of playing doesn't work with the Stones at all.

They should have went with Gene Simmons. winking smiley
