Charlie Watts 'studiojams' - Satisfaction
Posted by: turd ()

Posted this yesterday, but it sank to the bottom of the pile - thought I'd bring it back up as it might be of interest to Charlie fans if they hadn't seen it.
Here is the great man with Chuck L, Tim Ries, Chuck Loeb and others playing Satsfaction. (They also performed HTW and a couple of other songs.
Recorded October 2005 - this would have been around the bigger bang sessions maybe?? After Charlies cancer scare.

No, this the version of The Stones, the musical director Chuck Leavell is leading them, after getting rid of the weak links...grinning smiley

Charlie is the king of swing!!
I think he is one of the most important part of the sound of stones.

What is interresting is the bass playing.

Its groove is good and dancing, but what about the scale?

To my taste, it is typically the bitter, ginger-like scale of jazz sessions which sounds sometimes in the good tuning, and other time on the edge. Depends on your taste, you may find in the right tune, or out of key.

Thanks. That was great. Charlie is one of the few drummers around who understands the surges within the rhythm of a song. He kicks ass at the "Roll" in Rock and Roll.

sorry , Doxa, but this is one of Tim's own arrangements of Satisfaction. This often happens to be the opener to his Stones Project in jazzclubs.

I know, I was just joking (but actually the best version of "Satisfaction" I've heard for a long time...)

It's tripe. It's an anathema. It's an abomination.

It's Chuck Levell and Tim Ries.

(Or perhaps they have a great sense of humour and have made a chintzy version of a Rock Classic and even got its original drummer to contribute to their satire)

they are playing around with a song so well known that to try to do it like the Stones' version would be weird

I like what Charlie did with it. I don't think he would have participated if it was crap.

Ever hear Junior Wells' version, with Bob Margolin on guitar?
on the "This Ain't No Tribute" CD, bluesmen doing Stones songs.
that is a very different version but it fits the song somehow.

"A long time", to be precise, since 1971, the Bye Bye Britain live versions

Well, I wouldn't give it a thought if Charlie didn't play on it. I mean, furniture instruments and notestands for Satisfaction! Come on! Charlie is great though!

Great sound on Charlie's drum set, but the rides (are those the rides I mean?) are silent :-? wish he'd have that drum sound on ABB
