Too Much Blood
Posted by: Wuudy ()

I can't remember that i ever listened to this song but i came across it tonight. I must say it it's a very catchy tune. The lyrics or the spoken part are a bit weird. Espescially about the Texas Chain Saw, but still pretty funny."Don't saw off me leg"

But what struck me the most is the horns. It sounds so familiar. Because I never listened to this song it must sound familiar by another artist. Is this tune or at least the horns part covered by someone else?

Cheers,
Wuudy

Don't know about the horns ... but Mick was reportedly very drunk during the spoken section. There's a long version including a dirty joke (I'm told, I don't have it). Help anyone? UrbanSteel?

Currently listening to a bootleg JAMMING WITH STU which contains a 10:25 version.

Song is still in creation here....and Mick is still figuring out the lyrics & directing changes.
Much of the "spoken word" stuff from this take survives to the final version.

Mick does joke about everybody having herpes/everyone having VD /
everyone's a queer / everyone's a werewolf etc....

and makes a joke about telling a one-legged woman to "open her leg"...then
Mick says "at least it made Bill laugh".

There might be other jokes too...I'll listen again.

Along with She Was Hot and Undercover, the highlight of the album. And a really exciting variation of the Stones formula. Would like to hear it in a dance club...now.

No, I'm embarresed to say that I never really listen to the Undercover album. I do now and i like although i don't really like that '80's production. But it has a couple of great tracks on it like Undercover, She Was Hot, All the Way Down and Too Much Blood.

Where the bones were taken....and "taxi driver noticed him":

The Bois de Boulogne is a park located along the western edge of the 16th arrondissement of Paris, near the suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt.

The Bois de Boulogne covers an area of 8.459 kmĀ² (3.266 sq. miles, or 2,090 acres), which is 2.5 times larger than Central Park in New York, and 3.3 times larger than Hyde Park in London.

The northern part of the Bois de Boulogne is occupied by the Jardin d'Acclimatation, an amusement park with a menagerie and other attractions.

At night time, the area becomes one of Paris's most prominent red-light districts, though in recent years the French government has sought to eliminate prostitution in the park.

Apparently the band rode by there daily as they went to Pathe Marconi.

"you don't believe me, you pass by there every day"

(thanks to Keno)

TOO MUCH BLOOD
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

I want to dance, I want to sing
I want to bust up everything
To make some love
I want to dance, I want to sing
I want to bust up everything
And make some love

I can feel it in the air
Feel it up above
Feel the tension everywhere
There is too much blood
Too much blood, well alright

Everything you see
On the movie screen is tame
Everything's gonna be arranged

A friend of mine was this Japanese. He had a girlfriend in
Paris. He tried to date her in six months and eventually she
said yes. You know he took her to his apartment, cut off her
head. Put the rest of her body in the refrigerator, ate her
piece by piece. Put her in the refrigerator, put her in the
freezer. And when he ate her and took her bones to the Bois de
Boulogne, by chance a taxi driver noticed him burying the
bones. You don't believe me? Truth is stranger than fiction.
We drive through there every day.

I want to dance, I want to sing
I want to bust up everything
Be number one, yeah
I want to dance, I want to sing
I want to bust up everything
And have some fun

I can feel it everywhere
Feel it up above
Feel the tension in the air
There is too much blood, too much blood
Too much, yeah too much blood, alright

Did you ever see 'Texas Chain Saw Massacre'? Horrible, wasn't
it? You know people ask me: it is really true where you live
in Texas, it is really true what they do around there, people?
I say, "yeah everytime I drive through the crossroads I get
scared there's a bloke running around with a @#$%& chain
saw. Oh oh no, gonna, oh no. Don't saw off me leg, don't saw
off me arm." When I get to the movies, you know I'd like to
see something more romantic, you know. Like 'An Officer and a
Gentleman' or something. Something you can take the wife to,
you know what I mean?

Yeah!

I want to dance, I want to sing
I want to bust up everything
And have some fun
I want to dance, I want to sing
I want to bust up everything
And make some love

I can feel it everywhere
Feel it up above
Feel the tension in the air
There is too much blood, too much blood
Oh yeah

Pretty ladies, don't be scared
Pretty ladies, don't be scared
Pretty ladies, don't be scared
Pretty ladies, don't be scared

Pretty ladies, don't despair
There's still so much love
Pretty ladies, don't despair
Too much, too much, yeah
Too much blood, too much blood
Too much too much blood, too much blood
Too much blood, too much blood............

The Horns are very UB40 who were quite big at the time. Just speculating, but its similiar to Dance With The Devil by UB40

I thought Too Much Blood was arguably the strongest moment on the album aside from Undercover Of The Night, because the song seemed a little more developed than many, despite the fact it seems to just boil down to a chorus and some rapping (speaking). I quite like the eighties feel and i believe it is an example where the Stones desire to appear contemporary actually works reasonably well.

Is the funky single note guitar pattern Jim Barber's part? Always loved it, whoever plays it.

I think so, liddas. Mick wanted a modern (ala Andy Summers) guitar part there. A lot different than Mr. Richards' style.

It's very 'Thriller'ish, very early 80's, yes, but I mean that in a good way.

This is one of my wife's favourites. I dig it too. I love the whole Undercover album. It's fun and holds up quite well. I even love 'Wanna Hold You'! I know it's not a classic and even revered by the bulk of fanatics... but I don't care.

Here's YouTUbe link to an early version. It seems to be the
same "take" as the one from the JAMMING WITH STU bootleg that I referenced
earlier....but the quality of the recording is worse (muddier).

However...you can hear the joke about the "one-legged woman" at approx.
the 9:30 mark.

Love that song. Some of the jewels that blitz among some so-so Stones album. This one tops Undercover together with She Was Hot.

For some reason the horns always reminded me of Chicago's "Along Comes a Woman" Which came out around that time. It seems the Stones song was first...

Thanks Wuudy for this post, always want to start a thread about Too Much Blood.

Alway's loved this tune, your right I got the same feeling about the horns...although I don't know what.

Funny thing in Holland is that most peolple think that it was released as single because one of the radio stations (Radio 3 Vara) played the song more then the number one at that time.

Alway's wonder who wrote the tune it's not a Keith or Mick tune ...too orchestral for both of them........

There is actually NOT ENOUGH blood. Time to start giving the stuff again. Not wantonly wasting it.

Brings to mind Townsend's song 'Give Blood' (I think it was called).

The bass-playing is the highlight of this track, if only for the tone, (but not only for the tone).

Look closely in SAL and you'll see it on one of the possible setlists -- a missed opportunity.

Someone mentioned "Thriller" and I believe the video was in part a parody of that. On one of the remixes Mick says, "Are you hot for Michael Jackson, Vincent Price?"
