the basics were already there by 1964. after that, in terms of development of the rock song, to my ears:

-like a Rolling Stone- a single that breaks the 'acceptable' 3:00 mark and opens the floodgates of lyrical freedom

-Tomorrow Never Knows- kicks off the (then-)modern era of rock with the use of the studio as a tool/easel approach, incorporating reverse stuff, found sounds, unconventional use of instruments and studio technology

-Supper's Ready (genesis)/Echoes(pink Floyd) these 2 18+ minute epics transformed the ideas of what was possible. you could have a sidelong 6-part 'song' that went all over the map stylistically in the same piece. especially noteworthy for their time signatures, genesis slammed out 'apocalypse in 9/8' and floyd offered the first 0/4 time signature, in the middle of Echoes where there was no discernable chords, melody, rhythm or words. it was music summoning an entire world, like a martian soundscape.

-Baba Oreilly/Wont Get Fooled Again- the introduction of sequencers/programmable synths to the rock world

-the albums My Life In The Bush of Ghosts (Eno/Byrne) and Peter Gabriel 3- these 2 1980-era releases began the fusion of electronic rhythms with tribal rhythms, the next generation of electronic instruments, experimentation with drums/vocals (no cymbals on PG3, No band vocals (just 'found' vocals from other sources- talk radio, preachers, foreign singers, etc lifted out of context and pasted in as 'lead vocals') on Eno/Byrne.

most of these were not necessarily the 'first' uses of such breakthroughs but were popular and influential, in the development of the rock songwriting/recording universe.

It is by far the worst song the Rolling Stones have ever recorded or written....IMHO
