The Who - 0 None ???

They never had a #1 in America either. In fact, they never came close. I Can See For Miles peaked at #9. Pete's solo hit, Let My Love Open The Door, also peaked at #9.

They also never had a #1 album .... unless you count the Woodstock soundtrack.

The Stones' last UK #1 hit was 40 years ago: Honky Tonk Women
Their last UK Top 10 hit was 28 years ago: Start Me Up
Their last UK #1 album was 15 years ago: Voodoo Lounge

The last number One in Holland was Paint it Black re-released in 1990
before that Angie 4 weeks on number 1 stayed in the top40 for 17 weeks what was very long for that time.
And before that Brown Sugar
And ofcourse their sixties hits

Oh yes, of course! But Ruby Tuesday(including Melanie's version) and I'm free must have been quite high, too?
Read somewhere that Bruce Springsteen is the most successful no-No.1-singles artist but with lots of No.2s?! Don't remember if that was a general statement or only for the German market.

In the UK, where My Generation peaked at #2, yes. In America, My Generation only made it to #74.

Cream - 0 Okay, they were no top 40 band

Actually, they were. In the States, Sunshine Of Your Love went to #5. White Room made it to #6.

Girls' School was the B-side of Paul's massive 1977 UK hit Mull Of Kintyre. "Mull", one of the biggest selling singles ever in the UK, was the #1 hit, not Girls' School. In the U.S., it got flipped around, and Girls' School was the A-side. It reached #33.

10 by Spice Girls is quite amount - compared to the other ones their peak was realtively short time. I didn't realize they were THAT huge in Britain.

Of the names I don' see there, what about Queen? I thought they were very big in the 80s's. Also U2? Led Zeppelin ever had a single hit? Dylan topped once US list ("Like A Rolling Stone", but seemingly not UK charts.

Seemingly, many of the 'big' rock groups - The Who, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. - were never any big hit-makers. Contrary, The Stones were a HUGE hit band at the time.

Georgelicks or anyone who 'knows' this stuff:

Is it true that the biggest selling Stones single ever in Britain is "The Last Time"?

If that is true that can also support the claim that their popular peak in UK must have been in the early 1965 - they were "number one" in their home land, (like Bill Wyman famously claimed in one US television interview), and for a moment they actually seemed to compete The Beatles in popularitywise (contrary, in US only the success of "Satisfaction" would top them in the rank of The Beatles for a moment). "The Last Time" is also in the middle of in their incredible run of number ones. It came after "It's All Over Now" and "Little Red Rooster", and was followed by "Satisfaction" and "Get Off of My Cloud". It is no co-incidence that The Beatles picked up the idea of guitar riff and intro from it (like we discussed in the other thread). It was a trend setter song.

Spot on JJH Mick

The Who had two No.2's
They were stopped in 65 - My Generation - by Get Off Of My Cloud
and in 66 - I'm A Boy - By Jim Reeves, Distant Drums

Not such a tragedy as

19th Nervous Breakdown - 66 - Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walking!
(this interruped a very nice string of No.1's for the Stones)

and Brown Sugar - 71 - Dawn, Knock Three Times!

both Tragedies!

Cheers

Yes

The Last Time - 700.000
Satistaction - 600.000
Honky Tonk Women - 550.000
Get Off Of My Cloud - 500.000

Yet, Mick had the biggest seller with Dancing In The Street with 800.000 copies sold.

About Queen: they had and impressive run of Top 10 hits (24) but only 3 made it to the #1 (Bohemian Rhapsody twice in 1975 and 1992, Under Pressure and Innuendo)
