The Pathe Marconi 4

Nothing compares to the Big 4, but the albums from Some Girls thru Undercover have tons of good stuff on there.

One could make a great 80 minute, 15 or so song CD from these (plus an outtake or two).

Whadda ya think?

TOTALLY agree.
pathè marconi era is really on my fav ever. the groove they had that time, the song they wrote, a lot of them unreleased, really are stunning
i dont know, its their playing, lot of the songs were just 2-3 chords, rough jam sessions, but still sounding great

ps. ANY PICS AROUND??

Maybe I should throw "Handsome Girls" in there, too, as "Ya-Ya's" is generally considered with the Big 4.

this is a problem for me, too. I still feel like I don't know exactly which songs were when, or even all the songs. It's hard to listen straight through to outtakes compilations. For example, that "D Train" song ("Yellow Cab") always makes me want to put on something else entirely.

Here's what I've worked up:

Miss You (Extended mix)
Beast Of Burden
Shattered
Imagination (Handsome Girls)
HTW (Handsome Girls)
Emotional Rescue
She's So Cold
All About You
Start Me Up
Slave
Little T & A
Tops
Waiting On A Friend
She Was Hot
Pain Of Love
Too Tough
All The Way Down

Please note that I don't like "Undercover Of The Night".

I have "Never Stop", but SMU is already on there.

I also don't have a good quality boot of "Everlasting Is My Love" or "No Spare Parts", only poor quality versions - somebody hook a brother up on some good quality outtakes from this era.

What do you recommend?

Here's what I finally went with - I had forgotten about "Still LIfe"

Miss You (Rarities version)
Beast
Shattered
HTW (Handsome)
Imagination (Handsome)
Hound Dog (Handsome)
Emotional
She's So Cold
Start Me Up
T & A
Tops
Waiting On A Friend
A Train
UMT
Time Is On My Side
She Was Hot
Tie You Up
Too Tough
All The Way Down

One helluva CD - right at 80 minutes of bliss

It's getting there... but I would add at least "Think I'm Going Mad" instead of "All The Way Down", and I consider the choices from HANDSOME GIRLS surprising. I would put "Sweet Little Sixteen" instead there and probably "When The Whip Comes Down", too (to get more that 'punk' flavor of SOME GIRLS).

Addition: yeah, STILL LIFE CUTS: perfect choices!

By the way, if there ever is going to be any kind of BOOTLEG SERIES of the Stones, one volume should be PATHE MARCONI SESSIONS - it was really an inspired time of sessions. Their last moment of true glory as a living, breathing band, and they created a new, distinctive sound then. Their moment of ABBEY ROAD feeling perhaps?

They certainly started DW in Paris, but the bulk of the finished album would come from the New York sessions.
