It was an OK halftime show. I thought it was along the lines of the Stones performance regarding ho good it was. Prince was better than any of them though. Bruce did a good set, but was it the sound, or does the E Street Band not have any crunch at all? It seemed very family friendly, but what's wrong with that (NOTHING)? It weren't exactly what I'd call rock 'n roll. The Stones did that much better. Bruce is something different. Call it good or call it bad: It's not doing much for me. Opinions are like cocks. All males and shemales have them.

Nothing rong with that at all. Mick Jagger can be the same way sometimes.

It seems pretty much everybody is feeling a little crotchety today.....Not to mention more than a little hungover.

I dont think Springsteen needs to take advice from anyone on showmanship. Or "sincere ad libs". (Do you think Jagger's quips at the Superbowl were made up on the spot?)

absolutely not...i cringe when any act makes phony, scripted "adlibs"...especially Jagger.

back in the day when we were all a bit naive ...we bought those quips
hook, line & sinker. now that i realize that every single move is choreographed
and every adlib is scripted....it lessens the live experience for me.

i'm not giving Bruce advice....just offering an opinion in the same way
that I'd suggest that Joan Rivers should grow old gracefully.

Just wanted your opinion about the Cheese-factor. (got it)

I'm a bit conflicted...I like the fact that these classic rock groups are
playing at different events etc.... but wince a little when they try to
polish it too much or overly script between-song banter.

Imagine a young unknown Bruce Springsteen watching Bob Dylan perform
at a TV halftime show....scripting his adlibs and trying to be funny with GUACAMOLE. Young Bruce would've cringed too. smiling smiley

It's the nature of the event. Everything is pretty much pre-approved, scripted and rehearsed to the most minute detail.

Blame the NFL and the producers, more than the artists.

yes i know but...aren't live rock shows overly scripted & choreographed in general?
When acts do the obligatory "hello (your city here)! It's great to be here. Howabout those (fill in your local sports team)?!!? etc etc..."

My wife & I just roll our eyes. SOme peope eat it up...and believe that
it's an adlib.

It's really sad when its the same jokes & same band interaction....every show.
Is there any spontaneity left in a rock & roll show?

(btw - i completely understand the 12 minute halftime restriction etc....)

Is it just me or does Bruce seem to have a lot more hair (darker and more lustrous) than he had several years ago? Maybe I'm just imagining things.

He looked overwieght, and out of breath. During Born To Run, he struggled...it's obvious he's losing his touch.
Never was a fan, but I guess it's too late to become one now, he's become a shadow of his "glory days".

Excellent football game though, even though I wanted Phoenix.drinking smiley

Read most of this thread...quite comical. This is my take...I'm not a Bruce fan, I respect what he does and the amount of fans he has. I turned to my wife during the halftime show and said..." This is the first half time show I enjoyed in quite some time"

I thought it was a lot better then The Stones halftime show. Although that's not really saying much.

It was therefore no surprise that Steelers won the game.

It is a very tough thing to get right and you only get one shot at it. The challenges include the quick setup, lack of control over the sound, stadium setting, distractions etc. and then playing to an audience (live and TV) that are only marginally familar with the act.
I think Tom Petty got it right. Solid honest rock and roll. The songs and the playing stood for themselves and I think he impressed a lot of people who may have thought of him as a second tier act. They got their sound pretty much perfect. McCartney's approach and performace was similar
Bruce was about equal to the Stones. Strong performance of the songs but not at their peak levels. The mix was off but I think the big band makes that even harder to get right. Bruce played it up to be entertaining. A little hokie but nothing wrong with that in this setting.
Prince was a taped set with live vocals and his guitar for solos. Comparing that to a true live performance is apples and oranges. Maybe his way is more realistic way to put on this show to appeal to the masses (ala the miming TV performances of the 1960s) since this show is really aimed at the masses rather than the true fans.

Well the marketing strategy appears to be paying off so far. It appears ticket sales are going briskly for the US tour today.

slightly OT - I believe that the Stones Halftime performance is included
on the official Super Bowl DVD as a bonus......anyone have it? Is it simply the
performance? anything we didn't see on the air?

The NFL should put out a compilation DVD of recent classic rock halftime performances.

I came into this one with low expectations and I thought the show was GREAT! Great setlist, great energy, great performance.

Now, off to the WalMart to buy that Greatest Hits package!

the boss girls really get their panties in a wad over their guy, huh? i thought those days were done back around nebraska--guess not

for all his mouthing off though it'd be fun to see bruce debate someone with counter views to the political drivel that's become so much a part of his schtick- but he and the al gores of the world will never do it--would require backbone--and oh yeah--facts smiling smiley

but they'll sure abuse their one-sided pulpit when they see fit

so funny.

Some people were raised
"if you dont have something kind to say, why say anything at all"

other people were raised in a chicken coop.

just another example of hypocrisy....shouting down other people's
opinions with extreme exaggerations....equating anybody that is
not an ADORING SPRINGSTEEN FAN to "HATERS".

I'm not the one saying that others' opinions are irrelevant...you are.

If you actually read my posts on this thread....my critique focused
on the Cheesey aspects. You on the other hand blindly defend Springsteen
and commit drive-by sniping. I've never said that your opinion was not valid.
I will say that your posts don't have much substance.

From reading your posts...I'm not sure that you are fluent in English.
Maybe that's why you don't understand. Just giving you the benefit of the doubt. eye popping smiley

is this is a replay of his first romantic interlude with that exceptional singer/songwriter Patti Scialfa? (I mean, she must be good, right, because how could she get in a kick ass band like the E Street? Bruce would never compromise a slot in the band!)
