1981 Soundboards... what are the best ones?
Posted by: dcba ()

Hello you Stones fans,

I want to DL a few SB 1981 tapes but there's more than I can take. So I'd like to pick up the best ones first. By best I mean best PERFORMANCES not sound quality. I don't care for an average gig in glorious sound.
The Hartford Nov. 9 is pretty excellent so I'd like to your favorites.
Thx!

Whoops, I should have mentioned "besides Hampton" since it's by far the best 81/82 concert.
RE the Philie shows, you mean the Sept.25 or 26?

I don't think whether it's the 1st or 2nd Philly shows matters much. None of those hardly even qualify as 'average gigs' imo. They are quite entertaining though, especially the first - including an alternative version of Satisfaction and a disastrous rendition of Let It Bleed...also quite amusing to hear Mick 'teaching' Keith the opening riff to Hang Fire by 'na-na'-ing it.

don't know of any hampton soundboards....there's the long-circulating broadcast and simulcast sources. from the plethora of boards, i'll take either hartford from a performance standpoint....

Napoli 82/ Shattered in Europe/ We Love you Ronnie is a powerful performance with excellent sound.

The Philly 81 concerts were not the best performances.

Cedar Falls 11/20/81
New Orleans 12/5/81
Tempe 12/13/81
Hampton 12/18/81

Those are some of the best '81 shows that come to mind for me, as far as the performance is concerned. Sound quality is quite good on all of those too.

There are more great performances from that tour. Seattle 10/15/81 is great, the 10/26/81 Atlanta theater show was really good, the Hartford 11/10/81 show is very good, although I've heard both Hartford shows were quite good, I don't have the other one, and at least one of the East Rutherford shows is a very strong performance.

Pardon my ignorance but does New Orleans circulate as a soundboard recording?

Dallas 10/31
East Rutherford 11/05
Hartford 11/09 & 11/10
Cedar Falls 11/20
New Orleans 12/05
Hampton Roads 12/18

....but there are other ones, which are also "must haves"...if you're a fan of that tour. 2nd Seattle, the 2 last Largo shows, 2nd Pontiac, Lexington, Tempe Arizona....and others; they're close behind I chose

Personally I have a thing for Buffalo and Boulder...early on in the tour; I think they are great fun. Buffalo is a riot - and full of humour

Marko,

Looking forward to hearing both Orlando '81 shows.
Are your sources soundboard or audience?

I have an audience of one of the shows and the band was SMOKING but the sound quality sounds like it was recorded in Alabama for heavens sakes!

Does anyone have an idea on how basically the whole 81 tour ended up in the hands of Jap bootleggers? (no names needed just facts) ;-)

I know of three releases.
Black Limousine (Lobster Records, LCD 018/2).

Complete D.I.R. radio show recordings. Taken from LP, incl crackles (partly very loud!). Let It Bleed is misnamed Wait On Me. Same recordings as on the bootleg LPs Mission Direct Hits (RSG) and On Top Of Old Smokey (AT-81 RSSG). Recorded in Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans, Tucson, Washington DC during the 1981 Tour of the US.

(See Ancient IORR bootleg page)

Aint In Good To Be Alive (Vynil Gang Production, VGP175)
Recorded at the JFK Stadium Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 25th, 1981. The one special thing about this bootleg is that it has one of the very few performances, and a good one at that, of Tops and Street Fighting Man.

Kings Of Drugs (Rattle Snake, RS 077/78)
Recorded live at the Civic Center, Hartfor CT, november 10th, 1981. Reasonably good recording of a not too inspired show. But as is the case with some other RattleSnake recordings there is a notable hiss.

Sold (for a relatively small amount) by a very well known collector whom also was behind some of the very first vinyl boots like TMOQ. He sold a SB tape of all '81 shows, so there's more to come. Most older tape traders will know his name.

whats more interesting to know is how those soundboards came into the hands of this collector! I mean even in 1981 it was not easier than today to go to the show, straight to the mixing desk like "hey hello, Im just a collector, Im gonna plug my tape recorder in, you wont mind, or will ya?"

and speaking of japanese bootleggers - are they really boots over there? I mean this stuff is still sold quite openly over there. is there still a kind of legal loophole in Japan or is it more a case of noone really caring?
