1. Jack Bruce (I know many people can't stand his style of playing)
2. John Entwistle
3. John Paul Jones
...to me these stand out at the top, as I think of more I will list.
I recognize that many jazz bassists are technically superior than the aboved mentioned, but since I am not into that, I cannot comment.

I'd have to go with Ronnie Lane, James Jamerson and Willie Dixon. Besides all Dixon did on his own, he was a member of the original Chuck Berry recording band along with Johnnie Johnson and Ebby Hardy.

WILLIE DIXON
I will agree he is one of the greatest songwriters, ever...and I love the way he slapped that stand up bass around, I would probably put him in my top 10. I was fortunate to see him perform live at my College in the mid 70's

I'm surprised Ronnie Lane is only mentioned once! There's no one who could drive a song like he could.

Of course, Muddy's band, too, and he really helped shaped the whole Chicago sound.

True; Ronnie Lane played deceptively hard. His own songs are so sweet, and he was such a loveable little dwarf, but he growled down there. Played a great counterpoint to Ronnie Wood and Kenney. "Bad'n Ruin" of "Losing You". That 70's style of Basplaying is my favorite. Like Glover on "Smoke on the Water" when he first walks into the song.

a bit "white" isnt it?

Any list that doesnt include James Jamerson isnt worth debating!

I'm surprised that a lot of people don't include John Entwistle I thnk his bass playing is incredible, It's another instrument in band very unique.
