i love johnny cash so much i can't even articulate his contribution to the world.
i often think of how nashville spit him out even after he had been the biggest selling country music star for them for so many years...
...not even a record deal for him??? outrageous...
...and how spectacular it was that Rubin found him and nurtured him and had him record EVERYTHING cash could think of,,.just on acoustic...some to be further 'produced' and some just plain acoustic and johnny.... ...i often wish that our ol' boyz would do something similarly 'laid back' because i think there is still so much talent there....without all the huzzah and star trips and over production and such....
rubin is like the smithsonian museum in his contribution to ALL of us by grabbing john in those last ten years or so and recording just about hundreds of hours of good stuff, many yet to see the light of day in release form....and some of which has been released and is awe inspiring in it's grounded ferocity and tenderness...
God bless johnny and june...
and here's hoping the stones will do a lot of 'casual' recording and display their rooted raw brilliance in a plain form...i think the results would be spectacular....
yes, johnny is a religous icon now, like elvis and other great artists... and 'worship' is a term he would have shied away from, but is entirely appropriate considering his great spirit and contributions of soul...
if u can't rock me just came on the radio as i was writing his... hot hot hot...
r.i.p. always johnny and thank you...

Interesting and lengthy piece on Cash in the new issue of UNCUT out today, highlighting how he suffered an until now largely undocumented chronic drug addiction in the last 15-20 years of his life which probably hastened his demise.
I agree with Beelyboy about all of Rick Rubin's contributions, but a mention should also be made for the service that U2 did in helping out Johnny. When Johnny came to Dublin in early 1993, U2 got him into the studio with them to record their new song The Wanderer, where he became the lead vocalist. When it came out on their album Zooropa in July 1993 and sold many millions of copies, it put Cash in front of a young audience, a lot of whom were listening to him for the first time. I think it contributed a lot to the new, young fans who bought Cash albums when Rubin's American albums started coming out in 1994.
As shown in "Walk the Line", I believe that the loss of his older brother was something Johnny never fully recovered from. This childhood trauma colored the rest of his life, and yes, had it not been for June Carter, Johnny would've been a casualty many years ago.
"Worship" is wrong. Respect and admiration should replace that word. We all should be thankful that he lived to see his contributions recognized, and departed this world with a sense of satisfaction.
Now, there IS a creepy aspect to all of this, as Johnny dared to give us a glimpse into the Great Beyond. This is the one thing that leaves many folks unsettled. For me, he truly put life into perspective, through the lens of his own experiences, and makes you think: how will I be judged when I'm gone?

another of many stories (i hope will come to this) thread...
...shortly after his death, with appropriate drama of biblical proportion, his house at the lake in hendorsonville, Tenn, a long time haven for him and the many and upcoming singers and songwriters he started, the place where young kristorrerson landed his helicopter on the lawn to get johnny to listen to his demo...ad infintium, burned completely to the ground
Long-term respect for you, bassplayer617, make me change this headline once more. Myself I am restrictive versus these kinds changes; and I know bv doesnt fancy it at all. Hope can oversee it this time. Convinced by argument.
Anyone hear of the last recordings coming out anytime soon?
When the "100 Highways" CD came out, Rubin said there was enough material for 1 more CD, and it would be released in a year. But I haven't heard much about it since (and it's been several years).
Just love the Man in Black. Btw: In Keith's Camp X-ray, there's a huge, framed poster of Johnny. At lest there was for the best part of the ABB tour. So there's another fan for ya.
