OT: Best drum intro...
Posted by: tomk ()

I know most of you will say HTW, GOOMC, or Start Me Up,
but mine was always the live version of Imagination from the 1978 tour.
I'd like to know what y'all think.
There's a reason why I'm asking. I'll explain later.
BTW: I'm talking about Stones' drum intros, studio and live.

"Ain't proud to beg" I like the effect of "In media Res" that Charlie's drumming intro has.

I don't really associate The Stones with great drum intros, but the best is of course "Get off of my cloud". smiling smiley

EDIT: Sorry, just read the first post, that you expected that answer...

I love all the others mentioned too but THIS is the PERFECT Charlie intro of all time! as Jagger says at the end of the intro "YEAH!!"

I know a lot of good drumming from Charlie but a intro ..... I should listen to their complete repertoire

Slave
Tie You Up
Flip The Switch

You've got to keep in mind that some intros, like Hang Fire, aren't exactly intros - those are just edits.

Flip The Switch!! So powerful! The rest of the song is pretty dull compared to the intro, unfortunately...

Keith's guitaring in Flip The Switch is great I think. I thought it carried off pretty good live. But in a way I see (hear) what you're saying - it almost seems that the song wants to explode into something more bigger but it just stays with its head just above the water...but Keith's guitar, that sick lick he does throughout the intro and outro etc...that's just awesome.

3 comes into my mind now:

Opening live: totally agree with marcovandereijk, "No fade away"
Live in the set: totally agree with Wild Slivovitz, "Going to a go-go"
Studio: always loved "Out of Time", first Brian on the xilofone (or metalofone ?) and then the beat... beautiful !

Best of all I remember: KISS Eric Carr, "King of the Mountain" Asylum album

GOOMC - not simply the best of Charlie's, probably the best in R&R ... or does that need to be said?

Love the way the drums come crashing in on 'It Won't Take Long'.

On the perth version of Bitch the drums sound really cool on the intro. its this soft sounding "thump, thump, thump.." before Bill comes in. Also on some live versions of BOB from the 78 tour charlie did a similar sounding thing.

Hmm, as a few others may have said, Charlie is a fine drummer in the context of the song, but original intros? I don't know he has anything he did on drums comparable to the opening riffs of, say, 'Brown Sugar' or 'Jumping Jack flash'. But a couple stand out.

"Slave" - great one! A rare case where the song benefited so much more to begin with the drums and THEN Keith's riff, instead of the other way around.

I also love that short, machine-gun blast that starts off 'Mixed Emotions', just beating the guitar by about one second in time.

"Love Is Strong" - 6 quick notes, and it's on. An attention-getter.
