There is another threat on this performance where it is mentioned that they sounded like the 1967 European Tour. But as stated before the Spencer Davies Group may actually have the the tapes of this shows Stones performance

At the 68 NME show they used the same amplifiers(Vox Supremes and Super Foundation Bass amps) as the 1967 European tour, but during the 67 tour they had the footswitch's for the amps which meant they could get a more fuzzy overdriven sound.

The amps at the NME show were supplied by Vox and used by all of the bands, but photos from the day show no signs of the footswitchs. The stones probably would have sounded more cleaner than the 1967 in your face sound and thus closer to the RnR Circus sound.

Without the fuzz Satisfaction must have sounded different, perhaps a unique arrangement!?

Brian appears to be tuned to open E for this gig too.

This might be a case of wishful thinking, but would there be anyone on this forum who was there for the 68 NME - or possibly know someone who was? Would be great to know how JJF sounded.

The entire NME show has been professionally filmed and recorded. I cannot imagine that only the short clip shown at the time is all that exists. This would have been a great gem for their RARITIES album.

I can assure you that - depending on the short clip I have seen from that show - JJF sounded great! As I have stated before on another IORR thread some seconds from that show were broadcast during a quiz show by German TV station ZDF (Der Grosse Preis, July 1980) which was watched by millions of viewers in Germany and the neighbor regions. I will look if I still have it on DVD and if I can play it on my video/computer because actually I had a digitalized copy of the show (which due to the age of the recording is not too good).

So at least a clip of this show, if not the entire two songs, should be in their archives which to me seem well organized. And I do not think that the recording of the quiz show was destroyed so at least the clip still exists in the ZDF archives. If you consider that any big TV station, at least in Central Europe, could have a copy in their archives.

That would be strange, wouldn't it? What are the indications?

Been through this before, but in nearly every pic of him from that show, he's barring with one finger.

Wow, that is good news indeed. Southern Star Group (the inheritor of Southern TV) doens't respond to any requests concerning this show and the Spencer Davis Group which may have at least a copy of the soundtrack of that show doesn't respnd either. So this is really very very good news indeed, thank you for this info.

After my post I watched again the short JJF clip (00:34 min) from the ZDF and I am no more sure if it is from NME or not. Undoubtedly it is a recording with Brian Jones and a very sweaty Charlie Watts but now I think it is an instrumental playback with Jagger's live vocals. Mick Jagger is dressed different than on the picture of Carr's book but it is not Rock'n'Roll Circus (where the Stones played live except for Salt of the earth which was palyback with live vocals). Mick wears a suit with laces and a white shirt. There is a live setting without decoration. Does anyone know where it could be from?

in Tony Scaduto's Jagger bio, there's a pic of him throwing something into the crowd at Wembley - its taken from the NME show. Dont have it handy, but as far as I recall he's wearing a white shirt.

Does any one know if thier gear set up was similar to the rnr circus? I'm curious how thier sound was at this point? Rnr circus was diffinately a trans period in thier sound, that yielded some great results!

So more like this, but ofcourse we'll never know untill we get the tape (if ever)

OH....MY....GAAAAAAWD!!!!!!!! See, why can't there be more videos like this, from THIS time period???? Sigh. hot smiley

Gazza, didnt Mick end up throwing his shoes into the crowd at the NME show?

yes I read MJ threw his shoes in the crowd. Marianne apparently wept with joy due to their reception.

Wasnt there some sort of strike that prevented the whole thing from being filmed?

Brian still looks animated in the '67 clip. I wonder when it was he completely lost all desire to participate with the group? So, is there a bootleg from the '66 NME show? What a shame that Brian's next to last live performance with the group doesn't exist. Not that he contributed all that much to JJF. Out of all the instruments Brian played on Stones recordings, as far as we know, he never played bass. I've never even seen a photo of him with one.

1968 NME Pollwinners Concert

Can anybody out there shed any light on why the Stones surprise performance there has never surfaced, either in audio or video form.? All I've seen are a few b&w pictures of the (2?) songs they played.....

Fantastic photos by the way. I never knew until just now that they performed anywhere live in '68, excepting the R&R Circus. Brian seems engaged too. Maybe if this footage were to surface it would give him a little dignity back after being a zombie in the R&R Circus. I'm surprised no one mentioned the strange way the band was lined up at the '68 NME. I never saw all three guitarists on one side like that. It's also the closest I've ever seen Keith and Brian stand on stage, ever.

The NME concert for 1966 must have been something else.
Along with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones,
also playing were the Who, the Yardbirds, the Small Faces,
Herman's Hermit's, Spencer Davis Group, the Fortunes,
Roy Orbison, Alan Price, Cliff Richard, the Seekers, the Shadows,
Sounds Incorporated, Dusty Sprigfield, the Walker Brothers,
the Overlanders, Crispian St. Peters, and...Davy, Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Titch

On paper the best gig of all time. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Small Faces and The Yardbirds qualify that.

ITV Southern became TVS and is now Meridian.

When I was at school in the 60's I always remember the NME gigs live on TV and they were the greatest music I had seen played in my young life. Each band just played a couple of songs ,but it was constant.............just one band or artist after another. All the top artists from the U.K. on one show.Usually on a Sunday afternoon if I remember rightly. Will have to look up those gigs as I haven't seen them since then. >grinning smiley<

Pity the Beatles and Stones both wouldnt allow their performances to be filmed.

They couldnt agree on who would be the headliner. So, they decided that the show would have an interval. The Stones closed the first half, and the Beatles the second half.

The Beatles' final UK concert performance, if I'm not mistaken (the Rooftop gig wasnt a 'concert' per se)

Only about half of the broadcast 1966 show still survives anyway (as well as Dave Dee & Co, I have footage of The Yardbirds, Herman's Hermits, Dusty Springfield, Crispian St. Peters & 1 or 2 others... but certainly not The Who, The Small Faces, The Spencer Davis Group, & Cliff & The Shads). Would especially love to see Cliff Richard & The Shadows, as they included 'Blue Turns To Grey' in their set.

That really is one incredible bill, right enough. Probably the best five bands in the country at the time (maybe even the world) - all of whom have remained legendary. And Dusty as well. Hell, even Cliff & The Shadows - for all his cheesiness, still a legendary act and a great pairing.

Cant really imagine too many of the top acts now coming together to play 2-3 songs each on the same bill - unless it was for something like Live Aid or Live 8, giving them all global exposure. And in some cases, being so free of egos and the hunger for free publicity that they felt they didnt need the TV coverage.

Either Q or Mojo (I think Mojo) 8-10 years ago had an article about this gig.
I think they talked to either Mac or Kenny Jones (or both). They published a great picture of Lennon with his Casino, shades on.
