Well if it's any consolation stickydion, people have as you say been lamenting the decline of the Stones for years as you suggest. There was an article in Mojo magazine some nigh on twenty years ago where various literati (the sort of degenerate scum who write venemous reviews of Shine A Light and cause terminal upset on boards like this - they really need shooting) lamented the fact that th

Well reasoned point and one I would endorse. However I think that a degree of the disappointment is that the band in it's present incarnation is such a shadow of their former glories that it threatens to undermine the memory of how untouchable they once were. And that is cause for a lot of the discord amongst devotees from the two distinct camps: i.e. those enthusiasts who have managed

Well I think you've touched a nerve there Doxa; "But the point is that it has lasted now for sooooo lonoooog - that noone almost remembers that the Stones used to be something different - you know, creative, evolving band." This is what bothers me and I know bothers a lot of other people including "YouTubers" who are striving to re-present the band in it's prim

To be honest I'm the kind of guy who would get seriously excited about the release of the Maysles re-edited M.S.G. '69 film at an I-MAX cinema and am left comparatively comatose by the release of Shine A Light, but in spite of my personal and deeply held conviction that the Stones are well past their creative and performance prime, I'm really pleased that they are still able to fi

It would be great if whichever channel it is, re-broadcast the "Marquee 1971" gig, it's in the INA archives and therefore it can reasonably be assumed that French TV has the rights to rebroadcast this classic gig. It would have been a little more exciting than the Hyde Park gig which aside from any performance considerations has been available on video and DVD for over twenty ye

The clip you're referring to is one of several noteworthy moments on a boot DVD that started to circulate a couple of years ago titled "Stoned by the Rockers". The quality whilst far from perfect is stilll nevetheless watchable and part of the problems that affect the fidelity (or lack of) of the film lie in the provenance of the tape itself. It was taped off air in 1970 on a

Welll the answer to the original question is yes. I have been for a long time, I think the Stones at the height of their creative peak were the best band ever, but that's been and gone a long time ago. But the reason I wouldn't and don't go to great lengths to post such observations on site like this one is that really by doing so you're raining on a lot of people's pa

Delightful irony when Charlie ruminates on how "showbiz" is no longer where it's at (in 1966) and then you watch the clip that LA Forum has posted in response. I would suspect that the interview was conducted and filmed by Peter Whitehead, the erudite tones of the interviewer certainly sound like him.

Actually the more I think about this the more knocked out I am, there are few of us that have the sheer dogged determination to source and then follow up the contacts required to make a project like this happen. In the unlikely event that a definitive Stones retrospective is going to happen any time soon, I for one would nominate Lenchik as being ideally suited to put in the necessary groundwo

I'd like to think that this performance and other equally rare and scintillating moments of the band at the height of it's powers could be presented in the ultimate retrospective of The Rolling Stones. Perhaps in the style of the excellent Dylan film "No Direction Home"? Perhaps someone like Martin Scorcsese could direct? OK OK Only teasing! Sorry, sorry, etc, etc.

Hi Woody, A pleasure, he was really helpful and as I say after I'd spoken to him the book was literally at my doorstep in the UK the following day - seriously expensive postage though on top of a seriously expensive book but I know you'll enjoy it when you receive it and aside from the awesome photography, the interviews are a really enjoyable read. Ronnie Schneider in particular is

Couldn't agree more. Coldplay are the complete antithesis of Rock n' Roll. I'm not against people being into them, but why mention them here? If you want to tout new stuff how about stuff with a little attitude? We'll be getting posts on Keane and the Arctic Monkeys next.

Little bit difficult this one - as there are some people that say that the sound on the 4REELS/TOP OF THE LINE production is the best, while they also say that the image quality on the JOINTRIP version is the best. Anyway I've just checked out the JOINTRIP, GANJA and 4REELS versions and to be honest I can't discern that much difference in the sound on any of them, but the picture on

I think what Lenchik has done here is just awesome. It's really good to see not just the phenomonal editing job he's done but also the sheer dogged and persistant digging and delving to unearth examples of the band when it was at it's unbeatable peak and which most people are unaware of today. It's crazy when there are seemingly endless DVD releases of the band as it is now

Sorry EG I was just intrigued by your use of the term "forgettable" for an event which was so seminal in both the band's development and also the evolution of rock music from then on. It's all down to semantics. Perhaps copius use of emoticons might help.

Yes, I think it is. According to the reviews I've read, this new DAC release is from the same source as the Tarantura release but with the familiar Clapton slide guitar version of "Brown Sugar" tacked on the end of disc 2 and the "Carnival to Rio" that Clapton was working on at the time, tacked on the end of disc 1. And apparently the TAKRL is again from the same tape sou

Yes, I'm interested in these too, although they're apparently not released until the end of February. The TARKL name is eviently some kind of take on the old "The Amazing Kornyphone Record Label" and this Japanese incarnation seems to have some kind of relationship with the SODD outfit. M.S.G 22-6-75 is apparently the new sourced tape of the show where Clapton joined the St

Check out this link: a group of young guys who rehearse in a cemetery who were brought up by Stones obsessed parents and I've gotta say they're showing the benefits of their parents excellent taste. Particularly like "Beautiful Sunday" the lyrics might be a bit dodgy but the sound is something else!!! A refreshing alternative to a lot of the terminally lame non rock,

I love this intelligently written piece and the content echoes my feelings about this album, which really was a seminal moment in the development of the band but one with a slower uptake than "Sergeant Pepper's" The Brian Jonestown Massacre's, "Their Satanic Majesties Second Request" is recommended listening to fellow devotees as is viewing of "Dig" the

Well "Stone Alone" as I recall, truth to tell I read it nearly twenty years ago, was really a more of an autobiography by Wyman really covering his life and the formative years of the band up until the death of Brian Jones and the Hyde Park gig. If you haven't read it's it's definitely worth a punt, it is however Bill's perspective, not an awful lot of insight int

"... so is Stone Alone also "Stalinist" for focussing way more on Bill than on the others? According to is the viewpoint of the four current Stones. it doesn't pretend to be a historical reference work." No "Stone Alone" is merely "Bill'ist" as it's his autobiography - even the title gives a clue to the standpoint of the book. It woul
