If you imagine sound waves as a mountain range, it's like putting a roof over it and pushing up the mountains til they hit the roof. When the taller mountains hit the roof, they stop but the smaller once keep rising until they are all at the same level, some peaks will be crushed a little, some a lot, making the smaller and larger mountains all around the same level, ie the brick wall name.

Engineers these days are obsessed with adding plugins and compression to everything, regardless of whether it needs it or not. Take out everything below 100hz then another cut between 300 and 500 because somehow instruments now fight for the same space, when they never did before, how did those Olde Timey Engineers ever do it.

People are forgetting that it's more than just the amps and guitars, what type of microphones they were using to capture the amp sounds and what was done to that sound after that, was it always the same guy on the mixer, there are many variables but the most important thing is that you can't judge the sound off a $20 tape recorder that someone was recording the concert on, after all the
