That period (the first four and a half albums, plus singles) is my favourite but they did did some great things later, like Avalon, which is what the eighties should have sounded like. Oh Yeah was maybe the highlight of the Bryan Ferry concert I was at.

Quotepaulywaul Quotenoughties It starts in Newcastle the 25th of January... Gonna see 'em at the O2 on 7 Feb, dunno what to expect really ? Good, bad, in-between ? Not the biggest Roxy fan there ever was by any means. Bryan Ferry (solo) is the only one of my favourites I've seen live and he was wonderful (where are the italics? Read that in italics). Roxy's Live At The Apollo D

I like all the songs mentioned (especially Money, which is Iggy and the Stooges half a decade early) but Hitch Hike probably least, mainly because of the rather limp backing vocals. It's still good.

Quotetomk QuoteRocky Dijon Duke Richardson put it well. I always get a kick out of how the Stones remember him as not being a real producer but rather a guy who let the engineers produce - that is until they're unhappy with a particular track and then they blame the poor production on Andrew. Who says you can't have it both ways? Strange that some say they love Aftermath, Buttons,

Yes! Have You Seen Your Mother/We Love You would be a perfect opening/closing combination. If there are any Stones lawyers reading this, could you pass that along?

I think Mandarin also varies widely and speakers of one version can have great difficulty understanding those of another version. You'll find business opportunities for most languages and certainly any language spoken in a wealthy country so (apart from my feeling that that should be, at best, a secondary consideration anyway), I'd go with parislocksmith's advice and see which

QuoteROPENI Its funny, some people will criticize Fox but give Al-Jazeera TV a free pass.Give me a break. To some extent I agree but I think the difference is that al-Jazeera is a considerable advance for free speech in the region. Al-Jazzeera's broadcasting may not be better than that of Fox (I haven't watched enough of either of them to say) but as a development from what had been i

QuoteBärs Whatever Mick and Keith have done, it pales in comparison to what Brian did. How come that people don't get how sick it is to make five children with five different women and abandon them all? He repeatedly tortured his so called friend and laughed at it. He stole money from his band mates when he had secret contracts that gave him more money. What is there to respect in that perso

This is a clip I put together for a song by the 12th/13th century trouvère, the Chastelain de Couci. I know how everyone loves a good trouvère clip. It's called Li nouviautz tanz (The New Season) and is performed by Alla francesca.

QuoteLorenz look at the world now - who needs french? mandarin or spanish will be much, much better for his future. don't get me wrong, I learned french too, but if it's a decision on what might be useful for him in the future, I'd go for mandarin (or spanish). I don't see that. As I say, French is very important in Africa (and although China and India are getting the headli

Just another point which might help: remember that French is spreading rapidly in Africa as African populations rise, education improves and more people come to cities and need a language in common. It's estimated that there were 79 million African francophones in 1997 and to 115 million in 2006. I wouldn't want to emphasise that too much since I think it's important that langua

Two other great cover versions are Bryan Ferry's A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall and the Faces' The Wicked Messenger. Not better than Bob's versions, but rather as good. I think the same of Mr. Tambourine Man. The Byrds don't improve on the original but rather reinvent it in another, equally great, form.

My answer is always French, since I love the language and literature, but Mandarin would be close behind on my list of languages I'd choose to study. I suppose one point to consider is that he's more likely to achieve a useful level of fluency in French than in Mandarin.

Oh, yes, of course, the Gomper credits have been sorted out. About Factory Girl, Nico's site has Rocky on congas but Charlie on percussion; Keno just has Rocky on congas; timeisonourside has Charlie on tabla and the track talk here has Charlie on percussion.

And there are tracks without drums, but with some percussion played by someone else. I think all the percussion on Gomper is by Brian and the congas on Factory Girl are by Rocky Dijon. Plus some tracks don't have anyone on drums or other percussion: Play With Fire, Lady Jane, As Tears Go By....

I find groups like the Birds (and the Artwoods) fascinating, both for themselves and because of what might have been. I think you're right that they were unlikely to sell as much as the Who but they probably only needed a little luck to reach the commercial level of the Pretty Things.

I don't think there are many photos of Ray with any of his contemporaries. He seems to have kept himself to himself. But then it might just be chance (what was photoed and which photos we've seen. Quotecourtfieldroad It's all nice and well to point out who liked Brian, but there are plenty others outside of the Stones who have supplied stories about a less than likeable Brian. Just looking at his relations with women should be a tip off that this isn't just some negative smear campaign against Brian, there were issues there. It usually depends on what the context of their rel

Quoteproudmary "This one" did well enough, so maybe? But Mick said that time frame for Exile outtakes was from 69 to 71 and it doesn't leave a lot of material for Sticky deluxe. Yea, Beggars might be a better bet. Or Aftermath, or Some Girls, or the first three. The debut, with Sure I Do! Satanic would be interesting. Gold Painted Fingernails, finished at last.
