QuoteIrix Workaround for the german YouTube-GEMA-issue: (MKV-File, use the VLC-Player). The ping-pong stereo version of 'Satisfaction' is also contained on the east-german compilation 'The Rolling Stones' (LP / Cass.), AMIGA label, early 1982. The source for this compilation has been taken from the west-german Telefunken-Decca Schallplatten GmbH (Teldec). A pseudo ste

Quotefrankotero Geez, am I getting this right. TSMR is the only full album in true Mono and a few more songs? I know BB and LIB are fold-downs minus SFTD. The Rolling Stones - only exists in mono. 12 X 5 - UK songs only exist in mono, Chess songs only mixed to stereo (folded down in mono). No. 2 - Chess songs only mixed to stereo (folded down in mono), Everybody Needs Somebody To Love rel

Quotefrankotero Hmm. Don't like the way this is sounding. Still, I suppose TSMR should be in true mono. That means a lot to me as I prefer it to the Stereo mix. Yes, Satanic is the true mono mix. And the mix of Please Go Home is a dedicated mono mix that is thus unaccounted for; known mono pressings of Between The Buttons and Flowers have a fold-down of the stereo mix.

Quotewhitem8 Thanks for the explanation, and I appreciate how detailed your response was. Ok, so I am interested, do you think the over all sound is the same? Better? Was this a lost opportunity? Now with this release and your comparison to the 2002, where those stereo masters or the original mono, and if they were stereo then does that mean the tracks you said are identical to the 2002 are fold

Quotewhitem8Well I still think you are making some broad generalizations. I would say the fact the fade out is the same isn't necessarily they used the same 2002 masters, but perhaps that was from the original mastered source tape from the recording? Couldn't that be the case. And again, have you analyzed the frequency response? Recording levels? And compared? Not to be nit picky but wh

Quotewhitem8 So what is the empirical evidence he is using? Does he have frequency monitors that are comparing and contrasting the recordings using levels? I saw a lot of "opinion" but no evidence that is "fact". He is using his ears for making the claims about the same masters at the 2002. He does give some examples, but they still are not definitive evidence based on facts.

QuoteironbellyTechnically, we have a couple of facts from that preview in Billboard. And some of those facts are slightly alarming. 1. Once the tapes are in hand, Landi continues, “You start with a really great machine, like this Ampex ATR-102, which was made in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s,” - this means they run playback on relatively new machines. 2. “When we embarked upon restoring the St

QuotethkbeercanA 1971 'maxi-single" was released by Decca in the UK which featured Street Fighting Man, Surprise Surprise, and the STEREO mix of Everybody Needs Somebody To Love (the version found on the UK LP "Rolling Stones No. 2"). This was the first and ONLY official release of this song in stereo! FYI, the stereo mix of Everybody Needs Somebody To Love wasn't uniqu

QuotenickThe 2002 SACD / CD releases were put out as they were originally recorded not as they were originally released and all that reprocessed stereo, fade ins and outs removed. Use that as a guide in consideration of this collection. Not sure what you mean by fade ins and outs (like some of the later London CDs?), but while the fake stereo is gone, there was plenty of tinkering going on. Nar

Quotefrenki09Soooooo true! Aftermath is almost unlistenable in stereo. It's that dead space... "stereo mixes were pretty crude: everything was left, centre or right, with lots of dead space in between" It's a big relief to FINALLY have the mono releases out. I thought Brenda would never bother saying 'yes' to the mono versions being released... Depends on the

QuoteIrix"The Last Time" was the Band's first Single written by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards (US-Release: March 13, 1965) and peaked at #9 on the US-Billboard Hot 100 (Wikipedia). In the US, Tell Me beat it by 9 months. And Heart of Stone beat it by 3. But yes, The Last Time was the first Jagger/Richards single in the UK.

QuoteBluerangerBill Levenson, the original mastering engineer for the mono and stereo version of Beggars Banquet, has stated openly that he got specific instructions to use a dedicated mono mix for "Sympathy For The Devil", which was put on at the end of the mastertape of the stereo mix. He was asked to fold down the rest of the songs from stereo into mono. Bill isn't a mastering

One other minor note - Satisfaction runs at the correct speed, in contrast to Hot Rocks 1, where it runs a bit fast. Agreed that the alt 19th sounds better than any previous release. Thankfully these seem like straight transfers - there's no noise reduction, unlike a few horrible boots from a few years ago.

Quoteretired_dogHowever, the song titles alone don't mean a lot - there could be new versions or quality upgrades. The RCA titles are upgrades from previous sources. Satisfaction runs a few seconds longer than what's on Hot Rocks 1, and the stereo mix of Have You Seen Your Mother sounds better than I've ever heard it sound (although it needs a bit of EQ to open it up). QuotethkbeercanI honestly do not know how to respond. As I said, I was not in California when this was done, but was just repeating what I was told by MFSL engineers and department heads-that a special "Hot Rocks" master had to be created using assorted tapes. In fact, I remember being told that the tapes of the UK version of "Through The Past Darkly" had to be obtained becaus

Quotevancouver The song "Good Times" from OOOH appears as an alternate take on bootlegs of the aborted NECROPHILIA album and this is in stereo. i can't hear any diff ?? I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but there's an additional overdub or two not on the original version. Maybe some extra guitar fills.

QuotethkbeercanYes, "Sticky Fingers" was NOT an ABKCO album. However, MFSL had released both "Sticky Fingers" and "Some Girls" as audiophile LP's apart from the 11 LP boxed set. "Sticky Fingers" was issued prior to the box, perhaps by a couple of years. I did not live in California at the time, so I never saw the masters at the sound lab. Quite possi

QuoteoriginalstonesWhen ABKCO released the Remastered Series back in 2002 I expected all the stereo tracks to finally be released. Of course I was disappointed to say the least. I spoke with a guy at ABKCO a few years ago, who worked on the Remastered Series, and asked him why they didn't release any songs from Out Of Our Heads in stereo. He said "What do you mean Out Of Our Heads in

QuotethkbeercanAnyway, when it came to "Hot Rocks" we naturally did not have an original master to work with, since the Stones never went into the studio to record an album called "Hot Rocks". So in this case, we did have to use the masters for the various singles and splice together a one-of-a-kind master for this. Stereo tapes of certain songs, like "Satisfaction"

QuoteakgameboyYeah of course they went crazy over the Stones. But if you notice, around 1969 the screaming girls were nowhere to be seen because they soon realized they were hearing music that wasn't crappy. They only want to scream over crappy bands like the Jonas Brothers and the Beatles. Maybe if the Stones had had a better sound setup back in the early sixties so people could actually he

Quotesammy2112 She Loves You and I'll Get You were never released in true stereo either. Right, but they were recorded to 2-track; the 2-track session tapes are simply gone. If the documentation is correct, I believe How Do You Do It/Love Me Do (both versions) and P.S. I Love You were the only songs *recorded* only in mono. The demo session in 6/62 was done to 2-track, but not the 9/62

The long one is in stereo on a few LPs, FWIW. I'm only aware of mono for the short one. That was probably done in the UK at Regent, so mono is all we'

Quotewhitem8 I believe those songs were originally done in Mono, and the stereo mix was the crappy mix done by Martin just to get them out. Offhand I think the only songs "done in mono" were Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You, if even those. Everything else was done two 2-track, 4-track or 8-track and then mixed to mono and stereo. The lack of those songs is a typo, nothing more.

QuotethkbeercanWEll, the MFSL Hot Rocks was stereo, except for Satisfaction, Play With Fire, As Tears Go By and 19th Nervous Breakdown. My guess is that since "Time" and "Heart of Stone" were available elsewhere in the world, it was not a big deal for ABKCO to allow their use on this audiophile Hot Rocks. When it came to using stereo versions of "Satisfaction", "

Quotethkbeercan regarding the Hot Rocks issue of previously unheard stereo versions...I need to clarify something: When MFSL did an audiophile LP, we insisted on using 'original masters'. In our definition of that phrase, we meant the original 2 track stereo tape which was directly mixed down from multitrack and handed over to the record company by the artist. Generally the record co

Ok, I see all of the sheets have been posted. Some more random thoughts...: - I'm struck by how many 7.5 IPS tapes there apparently were. Odd that there were any, since studio masters are almost always 15 IPS (or sometimes 30 IPS). So those were copies made for unknown reasons. - There's no clear indication where the stereo mixes of Satisfaction/Play With Fire/Get Off Of My Cloud
