Interesting topic. Depends what you mean by "greatest entertainer". If you mean the one who had the most impact on pop culture, I suppose it would be Elvis, although I could see an argument for the Beatles, if you allow a band as well as an individual to qualify. My beef with Elvis has always been that he wasn't a songwriter and I think it is unfair to group him with other grea

I am there almaost every day to play squash and I often wonder what the concert must have been like. It took place in a hockey arena where the Oshawa Generals junior team (best known for their young defenceman Bobby Orr in the mid 60's) used to play. The arena was destroyed this year and they are replacing it with an indoor soccer dome. Anyone know any details...ie where they sta

I never understood the appeal of even the mid-70's Keith. Why do we think it is "cool" when someone acts irresponsibly and foolishly? Mick never is out of control. I find that to be cool. Keith became a drug addict in the 70's and as a result, was unable to be a productive member of the band. Is that cool? Perhaps it is the self promotion...the proposterous stories

They stopped playing together as a band when they got rich. Bands gel when they play day in and day out. The Stones ceased being a working band in the mid to late 70s, and that is why there ain't any masterpices since then. Well polished efforts that almost sound like they sounded during the best years...yes. But nothing like before. Alot to be said for what the Beatles did. As soon as t

I was thinking the same thing watching him at the Grammys. We are so familiar with him I think it is often lost on us the degree of his fame. What a life. Really...who were bigger icons in the 21st century? Elvis Beatles Sinatra Bing Crosby Jolsen James Dean, Marily Monroe but only because they died Jim Morrison but only because he died

It must be a very difficult decision for them to make. On the one hand they are on the downslide, as all people who near 70 are. Worst case is they embarrass themselves; best case is they crank it up again and thrill lots of people and make tons of money and everyone tells them how great they are. I think they should look at it like this: we might live to be 100, and at some point we just

I don't bemoan anyone for making as much money as they can. We are all whores for the right price. What irritates me, though, is the hypocrisy. Don't shill yourelf to the highest bidder and then pretend it is about the art or the the love of the fans. Admit it for what it is: you are in it to make a buck, just like a plumber or a teacher or a bus driver.

Here is my spin: The Stones will go down as one of the biggest entertainment stories of the past 100 years. Beatles, Bing Crosby, Elvis, Sinatra and maybe a few others, but that is it. They were white hot from the mod 60's to the mid 80's, and then enjoyed the nostalgia game for 20 years afer that. A mind-boggling run. Today they are irrelevant. A vital part of history, of course.

Of course it is true. That isn't to say they won't change their minds, but it means as of now they have no intention of playing again. It really makes perfect sense. Like he said, it has to happen eventually so why not now? The perfect time to go out. On top. Sure- rabid fans on this board scrutiize their playing, and it is obvious to us that they aren't as capable as they

When I call Oswald a "nut" I simply mean that he was an anti-social, angry, illogical drifter. Every piece of evidence seems to suggest that was the case. Here is what we know. Oswald bought a rifle. He brought it to work and it was used to kill the president. It is a fascinating story and has been analyzed like no event in history has been analyzed, and there are scads of "

Anyone who questions what really happened is nuts. Let me state very clearly what happened that day: A kook took a rifle to work and killed the president. The murder has been scrutinized possibly more than any event in history, and there has yet to be any evidence to suggest a conspiracy. Vincent Bugliosi wrote a book a few years ago that successfully refutes every possible conspir

This is a very interesting topic that should be analysed in more detail 1) are there obvious places that they haven't played that you would think they would have? Any glaring omissions? 2) where is the wierdest place they have ever played? Anything after they got popular, say in 1964. 3) is there a futire gig that would be the pinnacle? The great Pyramids (not the one in Vegas) ? S

I'm not sure why people insist Mick did this or did that when they don't have the slightest idea what really happened. Not being part of Mick's circle of friends, we don't have a clue what his habits were or were not. Jerry Hall certainly was in the know, and I find it hard to imagine that she made up this story out of thin air. I believe her, and it is interesting to me th

Trainarollin mentioned recently that he has talked to someone in the know about the Jagger 88 tour. I was going to ask him in that thread until it ocurred to me it might be an interesting topic on it's own. I have always been interested in how it cam to be. Did he play to big crowds? Were ticket sales a surprise or a dissapointment? It must have seemed wierd to everyone involved to see M

Does anyone know where the boys stayed for the 1979 gigs? I can't imagine that they stayed in Oshawa, which is as blue collar a town as you could possibly find. Surely they must have stayed in Toronto, no?

Interesting note: the Oshawa Civic Centre has just been torn down, to make way for an indoor soccer feild. I live in Whitby, Ontario, which borders Oshawa. I play squash at the civic centre, and there has never been a day that I have gone there and not thought about the 1979 shows. The civic centre, of course, will always be known as the home of the junior hockey Oshawa Generals, where a 14 year

Truly the entertainment phenomenon of the 20th century. Sinatra, Elvis, maybe Bing Crosby were all HUGE but the Beatles went beyond it. Even today, it is impossible to go a few days without hearing about the Beatles. Try it sometime. I wish I had been around in 1964 to experience it firsthand.

I don't blame him. I could never quite figure out why a grown man would want an autograph. Kids? Of course. But in this day and age its all about Ebay. Paul Newman said he stopped giving autographs the day we was standing by a urinal and someone passed him a pen and paper. I can only imagine how celebrities get hassled. Why does Ringo owe any of us anything?

By all accounts he was a lovely bloke. I don't know much about him. I'm interested if anyone has insight in the following: 1) how did he die...was it a surprise? 2) who was he close to in the band 3) was he an intgegral part of the band...and if so, why was he never considered one of the main members 4) what was he like...was he a family man? a piss artist? one of the boys? a l

Bollocks. He is the luckiest man alive. If he hadn't met Mick he'd have amounted to nothing. People have the misconception that Keith is integral to the success of the Stones. Mick could have accomplished every bit as much, if not more, with 100 other guitarists. Keith has adopted the gunslinger, rogue personlality and it makes people celebrate him as anti-establishment or some o

The Beatles were the entertainment phenomenon of the 20th century. 40 years later you can't go a day without hearing a reference to them. I used to agree with an earlier poster, who said their music is like musak. That's because there songs have become standards and we here them everywhere. Perhaps they have been overplayed. But they are genius. The Stone's 5 masterpieces d

Seems odd to me that Charlie is still in the band. I realise the pay is good...but a man that age who is admittedley an introvert...why bother? And no offense to all the drummers out there, but its hardly like he is responsible for a brilliant concert or a particularly moving experience. So why live in hotels and put up with the travel and all the other nonsense?
