Question about the new SODD releases.
Posted by: Tumblin_Dice_07 ()
Date: August 6, 2007 23:24

Ok..........they might not actually be "new" releases, but the SODD label is re-releasing some great old bootlegs. Philadelphia Special, Ft. Worth '72, Leeds '71, etc......

has anybody heard any of the SODD re-releases and if so, are they really an upgrade? I just wanna know if they're worth tracking down and/or downloading before I start a torrent for my 15th version of Leeds '71.

SODD re-release old boots but are certainly no upgrades imho. Sometimes even worse than the originals. Like their release of the 'The Paris Results'. I say go for the old ones like VGP. If they are too expensive or hard to get I recommend Dog and Cat, for they are more rewarding and not too expensive. A good release is their recent outing, the 1973 Munich shows. That one is good imo.

I think these "SODD reviews" written on bootlegzone are written by the company themselves. But of course I'm eager to check out the Get Your Leeds Lungs Out torrent.... Are you on dial-up since you have doubts in downloading torrents, Tumblin?
I wrote some comments on SODD on the Paris Results thread at HC - hope I didn't offend anyone. It's just that I don't think too highly of labels that keep rehashing allready-released-material - and don't even have the knowledge of finding the best possible sources. But maybe Get Your Leeds Lungs Out will make me change my view on them.....most of their releases are not something to go for - that's for sure....unless those are the only ones one can find.
WHen it comes to free torrents....well they're free, so all labels are welcome - I was speaking of buying these discs

Hi
Does anyone have a link for 'Bootleg Zone'as described above?
Thanks

The Paris Results release from SODD is another exercise in hiss/click filters...
Nonoise/no soul. But the VGP release Place Pigalle isn't much better in that respect. The original OBR release is still the best release for those recordings.

On the other hand the SODD bonus transfer of the vinyl Philladelphia Special is quite good.

I was wondering about that. They don't have a negative word to say about any of the releases.

Nah, I'm on DSL. I've actually downloaded alot of torrents. I just haven't figured out how to upload my own yet. It seems a complicated thing to do.

Remastering the remasters of a copy of an old tape of a friend of mine which had a remastered copy of a tape from the copy of the original source!

No, i'm just jokin'

For some boots, the remastering is really good !
Like many of us , i've bought lots of vinyl and first generation of CD
MOST of them are from (R.I.P) the label Swingin' pig.
When i 'm listening to the remastered versions, some are f.....g great.

But i have the nostalgia from some old releases which sound more rough and better.
and I think that the remastering is at his best level now.
What can they do better???
The artwork? Complete a show with an audience recording?

For uploading a torrent , i'm agree with you Tumblingdice
it's very long and complicated!

HonestMan, a lot of the SODD releases is released in better quality on other "remastered" CDs. So....why release something that's worse than the best releases out there ? Most VGP/DAC releases beats the SODD releases - allthough VGP/DAC have done a few mistakes through the years too.
I can see why some people don't want ANY kind of remastering. It 'can' butcher a recording.
But I think that a few labels out there have done an excellent job with improving the sound - almost like it's from a better generation source.

@erik-snow

Thx for your answer!
It's a wise look and opinion of what has been done during these past years.

I just listened to two new SODD releases,Edinburgh 82 and Vancouver First Night 72.They are not remastered, they are newly discovered sources and while Edinburgh was available in good sound before on The Flower of Scotland and Baby Lets's Play House the Vancouver 72 is a major upgrade! A joy listening to the opening show of 1972 in this great sound.

I'm quite skeptical as to whether this is a "new source" or not.

shit, getting teased about Vancouver 1972 as major upgrade and no sample shows up to deliver proof for this! THIS IS NO GOOD SIGN for being really major upgrade.

good joke, but I have wasted already enough money for false promises from bootleggers so I am careful!!!

Okay,

Ricarr99 made a comment about a new source for the Vancouver show on the SODD label. That is incorrect. It is the same tape source with heavy remastering to make it sound brighter. My full review can be found here:

[boot-review.com]

SODD's working of the tape might not be to everyone's taste of course, but it is definitely the same tape used on the older Off Beat and Idol Mind releases.

Well, SODD 002/003 Nasty Music does contain a bonus disc with an upgrade of the audience recording of brussels october 17th first show.

I have both these releases now, and it's the same sources as usual - only with some EQ job.
I don't understand how they can be considered an upgrade at all. THey're louder and brighter - but that's not what makes a recording good.

Tumblin_Dice, I put Vancouver up at Hungercity if interested
