Posted by: open-g ()

I did some home recording of Wild Horses
3 acoustic guitars, one of 'em Nashville strung
1 Telecaster plus lead and backing vocals.

Hey Open G ... you did a very nice version of one of my favorite songs! Is "Stikkyfingers" your Band? Backing voice sounds a bit like Keith ...

Great version!
What studio program do you use?

I love the guitar playing. Your voice is a little "thin", perhaps. But I doubt that the version would be any better by using a "professional" singer, because he/she would probably not have the same feeling for the song (and the band!) that you have. Great version!

PS. I listened to it a second time, and think I would have removed the Telecaster, and made it 100% acoustic. But that's a matter of taste, of course!

Hi open-g,

since you posted "House On The Hill" by your band Guilloteens I am a big fan of you (still listen regularly to this great tune).
Your version of Wild Horses is simply great. It's in my top three of cover versions of this song (the others are the ones by The Flying Burrito Brothers and Leon Russell). Well done!

Hi folks, thanks for your input.

actually it's two of us on this song, not a band.
and no "Stikkyfingers" is not my band, but that's Ian of Stikkyfingers allright.
we collaborated over the net, exchanging mp3 files.
Ian is in England, I'm in Berlin.
It's the first time I tried this, worked fine for me.
kinda international home recording, hehe.
I used Emagic Logic Platinum 5.5 (last windows version) to record it and import files.

err, Ian can ya have a look at the id tags^^ sry

Okay ... so it's Mr. "Stickyfinger" and Mr. "Open G" playing the song together? Did I get that right now?

Anyway ... it's very well done. Thanks for that!

Open-g,

You know, I hate it anymore when fans put their own versions of songs on here. Not because they don't have the right to do so on here, but because it seems like most of the time they are simply not good. Sometimes they're even bad to the point you wonder if theye were joking. And then you don't want to comment at all, because you don't want to tell the truth and hurt their feelings, but you can't lie either.

So let me just tell you that, in my humble opinion, that was a simply excellent version. I found not a fault in it. Lovely job, guys. Lovely.

Sorry friend. Didn't mean for the intro to that to sound so ominous.

Again - a killer version. One I would proudly play for friends.

Ok, for the 'techies' out there, here's my input. The vocals were recorded in one take (I have just got a Samson condenser mike and Line6 Toneport UX2), so it is a bit 'rough and ready', but we wanted to do a version that sounded good, without spending ages getting it 'perfect'. I recorded the backing vocals in one take also. I read that 'double tracking' the vocals can make them sound 'thicker', but we didn't do that on this occasion.

Personally I think that the Nashville tuning that open-g has used really makes the track, and his slide playing is excellent in my opinion!

The other acoustic guitar (right channel) is me playing the track in open g tuning, rather like I would when Stikkyfingers play Wild Horses at our gigs.

I recorded my parts into my PC using Mackie Traction 2, and sent them to the 'producer' (open-g) in Berlin for the final mix!

I have to say that this has been great fun! It has worked well as a collaboration and maybe we will record another song in the future!

Thankyou all so much for your reviews - we weren't sure what you would make of our first efforts! winking smiley

All Stones fans (including me) are very wary of people who cover Stones songs, so we appreciate your encouragement even more! Thanks to you all!

Nothing wrong with covering Stones songs, IMO.
but as everyone around here is a little biased (for good reason) - the cover should be... hmm, kind of decent? or interesting.

good or bad cover, I wouldn't discourage anyone doing so.
he/she/they do it because they love the Stones and it's all about: "pass it on, pal"
