“The Rocket 88 Story – Vol. 03a” - 16th November 1979 Hamburg & 15th December 1979 - London (feat. STU, Charlie Watts and many more)
“The Rocket 88 Story: 1978 – 1985” feat. Ian Stewart, Charlie Watts and many more
This is a series of shows provided by nzb to present the story of Rocket 88 - the side project of Ian 'Stu' Stewart and Charlie Watts.
Thanks very much to nzb that provided us his recordings, to Jaap (Stonesmuziekfan) who gave critic and advise regarding my work and to my friend Riccardo (MrNo) who participated to a big part of my collection.
Volume 03a: Rocket 88
16th November 1979 - Hamburg, West-Germany, CCH, Saal 1
15th December 1979 - London, The Venue.
From the 16th November 1979 Hamburg-show it seems that only 3 tracks (17’30) were broadcast by German NDR radio (probably not live, but on a later, unknown date).
The 15th December 1979 London Venue- show was recorded with the Rolling Stones Mobile and broadcast in parts on UK radio (BBC Radio 1) on the program ‘Rock On Saturday’ (air date is probably January 19, 1980). The biggest part of this show was officially release as a downloaded album tribute to STU by guitarist Danny Adler in his "The Danny Adler Legacy Series" (asVol 11). So they can't be used for our series! But the 3 first tracks of this show were left out on this official release, so we decided to make a compilation with these two shows:
Part 1: 16th November 1979 - Hamburg, West-Germany, CCH, Saal 1
Line-up: CW (dr)/STU (p)/Alexis Korner (gtr, voc)/Jack Bruce (bass)/Bob Hall (p)/ George Green (p)/Hal Singer (sax)/Don Weller (sax)/John Picard (tb)/Colin Smith (tp)
01 - Roadhouse Boogie (Pete Johnson) (faded in)
02 - St. Louis Blues (William C. Handy)
03 - Swindon Swing (Colin Smith) (faded out)
It's a very partial recording (17’20), the beginning of “Roadhouse Boogie” and the end of “Swindon Swing” are missing. I amplified the sound (+1,2db) and I deleted a gap at 42s in “Roadhouse Boogie”.
Part2: 15th December 1979 - London, The Venue.
Line-up: CW (dr)/STU (p; not on all songs)/Don Weller (sax)/Colin Smith (tp)/John
Picard (tb)/Danny Adler (gtr, voc)/Jack Bruce (bass, voc)/Pete York (dr)/Bob Hall (p)/George Green (p)/Chris Farlowe (voc)/Dick Morrissey (sax)
04 - Introduction by Alexis Korner
05 - Pinetop's Boogie Woogie (Clarence 'Pinetop' Smith) & Band Introduction
06 - Rock House Boogie (Josea Davis)
07 - Good Rockin’ Tonight (Roy Brown)
(infos taken from The Rolling Stones Complete Works Database by Nico Zentgraf
Here it was not necessary to do anything other than a little sound amplification (+1,5db).
