Audacity is the product many (other) people use, so that has to be a good/valid recommendation.
I though use an equivalent product called 'Goldwave'.
BOTH have a learning curve. :-)
I selected Goldwave (a long time back) largely because it has a -try-before-you-buy policy. You can use it for (I think) 40 edits before you have to pay. (I just looked at their web site and couldn't quickly determine if they still do that).
