Audacity is the product many (other) people use, so that has to be a good/valid recommendation.
I though use an equivalent product called 'Goldwave'.
BOTH have a learning curve. :-)
I selected Goldwave (a long time back) largely because it has a -try-before-you-buy policy. You can use it for (I think) 40 edits before you have to pay. (I just looked at their web site and couldn't quickly determine if they still do that).

Looking for editing software where I can make sound of mp3 louder. I have soundboard sourced mp3 from Bob Dylan's farm aid appearance. I would like to make the sound louder. any suggestions? Free would-be best option but looking for something that works and perhaps idiot free,

Try mp3DirectCut - it's for free, works without re-encoding, but it's not quite "idiot-proof".
