INFO Unsurpassed Masters Remastered Edition EXT-007
Posted by: exilestones ()
Date: February 23, 2022 19:14

Is this EXT-007 release any different than the other Unsurpassed Masters? It
has the exact same track listing but there's on 4 discs and says "remeastered."

Unsurpassed Masters Remastered Edition (Extract Factory EXT 007)

Several years ago John Busher (JWcool smiley posted assembled one of the best sounding and cohesive collection of Rolling Stones outtakes to date. On seven discs, he covers tracks from 1963 to 1979, from before their first album through to sessions for Tattoo You. Called Unsurpassed Masters, there was no compression or hiss reduction done during the remastering process. Everything has been left as pure as possible. Sometimes, unwanted processing and sonic imperfections are inherent in the source material used.

Extract Factory pressed the first four discs covering outtakes and rarities from 1963 through 1971 in the same excellent sound quality. While nothing is new, the material here is in the best sound quality possible and the tracks are selected to present the most interesting and compact presentation of the Stones’ artistic and commercial development.

This set drawn obvious comparisons to Time Trip 1966-1974 (Dog N Cat DAC-063) and this past summer’s massive Genuine Black Box 1961 1974 on Scorpio. Nothing can really surpass the Scorpio set in terms of the wealth of material, packaging and attention to detail, but Extract Factory is a good alternative to the more exotic sets. The packaging is basic but still very good and the label includes accurate liner notes detailing the origin of every track.

Disc 1

All tracks are in mono except for “Route 66 (Live On The BBC 3/19/64),” “Cops And Robbers (Live On The BBC 3/19/64),” “You Better Move On (Live On The BBC 3/19/64),” “Mona (Live On The BBC 3/19/64),” “Hi Heeled Sneakers (Outtake 6/64),” “Stewed And Keefed (Outtake 6/64),” “Down In The Bottom (Outtake 6/64),” and “Tell Me Baby (Outtake 6/64)” which are in stereo.

Disc one opens with a ninety second clip from an unidentified interview where Jagger declares his love for bootlegs and his wanting to see more of them. His only complaint about them is the high price (something which still applies). The music starts with several tracks, “Baby What’s Wrong,” “Diddley Daddy” and “Bright Lights, Big City” from the first Rolling Stones recording session to include the Jagger/Richards/Jones/Wyman/Watts and Stewart line up.

The bulk of the disc contains tracks from their multiple trips to the BBC and their stint on the Saturday Club. Included also is their Rice Krispies radio commercial and sessions from Chess Studios in Chicago on their first US tour. It ends with a track from the BBC recorded in 1965, almost two full years since their first session.

Disc 2

Volume two picks up with the BBC sessions in 1965 which include the excellent songs “The Spider And The Fly” and “Cry To Me.” Alternate and backing tracks for their early hits such as “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “19th Nervous Breakdown” follow in excellent sound quality.

Their flirtation with psychedelia is represented by tracks from Their Satanic Majesties Request “Citadel” and “2000 Light Years From Home.” The disc ends with backing tracks to the single “Jumping Jack Flash” and the b-side “Children Of The Moon.”

Disc 3

On disc three, all tracks in stereo except for “Memo From Turner (alternate take)” which is in mono. This disc covers material from the Beggars Banquet sessions from March to June 1968 and the Let It Bleed sessions from February to June 1969.

On disc four all tracks are in stereo except for “Sway (Alternate Mix),” “Silver Train (Alternate Take)” and “All Down The Line (Alternate Mix)” which are in mono.
While nothing is groundbreaking with this, it is still a nicely packaged silver pressed edition of essential to own Stones outtakes and radio sessions worth having.

Disc 4

On disc four all tracks are in stereo except for “Sway (Alternate Mix),” “Silver Train (Alternate Take)” and “All Down The Line (Alternate Mix)” which are in mono.

UNSURPASSED MASTERS VOL. 7
(Odds & Ends: 1963-70)
------------------------------------
**********************
JWB's comments on the original upload
This volume was basically an excuse for me to remaster the newly surfaced material from "Time Trip 5", and also to upgrade a few tracks from the earlier volumes. This volume features the newly-surfaced STEREO mix of "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby" which sounds better than the standard mono mix, even in it's bootleg state! There are also STEREO mixes of "The Last Time" and "19th Nervous Breakdown", which appear in master tape quality and (for some reason) have never been officially released!

I used to buy outtakes cds all the time pre-internet, you know the deal, you get 10-15 songs you already had (maybe in worse or better quality) to get 2 or 3 you never heard. I was away from iorr.org for a long time, but rediscovered this awesome forum 2 years ago and spent my time reading, downloading live stuff, and then studio stuff. Now it was not 20 bucks a disc anymore, but I still had tons of repeats. I decided to undertake a weeks long task, compiling my outtakes from different sources and grouping them based on the album they were recorded for. That is a somewhat subjective statement, as the 68-72 period has crossovers, as well as some girls/emotional rescue sessions. I used the liner notes, bootlegzone, and the .de excellent outtakes website as reference, but I didn't lose any sleep over being perfect.

I would a/b and of course sometimes a/b/c/d different sources of songs, picking the best quality, fullest length, speed corrected, etc. A handful of them had to be taken from mp3 sources, because I couldn't find flac. Notably, the excellent obsidian compilation is only available in 320 mp3, and it is itelf a compilation that had some of the best versions of some songs. But I could not find a source listing, so I just used the mp3 if it was a notably better sounding file. I also made the mistake myself of not noting my sources, I would have posted my sources to see if some of you knew of better ones. Oh well, like I said this is for fun, no sleep lost.

I plan on posting these to my megaupload account in the upcoming days. I know I don't have everything, but I have a lot. I'd love it if those who know of songs I am missing can post what it is, and a source if it's known.

My goal in this project was to listen to these songs more. My whole collection is on hard drives in flac/mp3 format, so what I do, for example, is take the outtakes from some girls, throw them in my some girls folder, edit the tags to make them all say some girls in the album tag, number them, and then I have the 30-40 track some girls album we all want to see. I listen to the outtakes way more than I ever did, because I don't have to fight through all of the redundant tracks and sometimes poor . And it cleaned up my hard drive to get rid of 2-5 inferior versions of these songs.

Anyway, I think there are some here who could help me with this, and others who would like to hear these songs in a more convenient manner, and would download my posts.

It is a vast undertaking that will inevitably end up incomplete, but its worth a cataloging attempt if nothing else.

The JWB series kind of had the same idea, but he left out the poor recordings you refer to.

yes but they mix with bbc recordings,,

I understand, but Vol 3 - Vol 7 have none
BBC is used only sparingly on 1 and 2.

Anyway, just an observation of someone who did a nice job of it.

Great idea, I'd be most interested in helping in this project

John Busher compiled the JWB set for his uncle, don't believe he wanted to make it complete but rather stuff you could listen to easily & not restricted to outtakes.

There have been a number of compilations covering specific eras of the Stones.

vancouver has done Buttons & Beggars & even a listenable Satanic Sessions.

Silkcut did Some Girls on Dime although I didn't have the bandwidth at the time to download them.

campannella has done IORR, Goats Head, Tattoo & Emotional.

I've been kinda looking at this for the past year or so. The problem is, what do you put in or leave out. The outtakes are in, or are they? I'm convinced that the instrumental Satisfaction & Lady Jane are fakes made by combining out-of-phase stereo versions into one channel. How about the long versions of Paint It Black & Gimme Shelter from those Guitar Hero things. Martin Elliott lists some of the Andrew Loog Oldham concoctions that may or may not have the Stones on them.

Where do you put stuff that's been recorded at one session, set aside, then redone later for another album, for example Never Stop/Start Me Up

Another problem I've been tackling is the speed & glitch problems inherent in a lot of boots, these are mostly fixable but you're creating yet another version of something that's already out there.

What I have been doing is downloading every compilation in flacs I can find, I believe I've got most of what's available in mp3. But then new stuff keeps popping up. Scorpio just released the 6-cd set including the 2 previously unknown Little Boy Blue recordings.

There are also some compilations that I feel should be left as is, in an 'Ultimate' compilation, these include
Surrey Rehearsals
Requests & Requires (Citadel)
Satanic Sessions
Dirty Works Glimmer Twins Private Tape
Monitor Mixes (Steel Wheels)
Training Wheels (Steel Wheels)
Voodoo Brew
Voodoo Stew
Voodoo Residue
Bigger Bang Mixes (mp3 only available, thx to Gazza for this one)

Here's what I've come up with chronologically for the first few years. The tentative numbering is from Martin Elliott's Complete Recording Sessions 1962-2002

The Rolling Stones - 1963-1964 Unsurpassed Masters Volumes 1-7 Remastered (Remasters Workshop 7CDs piratebay 10130397) Fan compilation of outtakes, instrumentals, alternate takes and backing tracks by JWB. "This was researched and compiled by a person known as JWB. He undertook a mammoth project, locating the best-available sources for all of this material, and mastering it, and getting it out there. I have to say that this is, hands down, the most impressive fan-created collection I have ever heard. It should be held up as an example of what an exhaustive retrospective or anthology should be like. 99% of the recordings are in stunning quality. You may never have heard some of these recordings in this kind of quality. All credit and thanks must go to JWB, who truly went above and beyond on this one."

If you grabbed it from Guitars101, everything there is a "re-post" from various sites, including material from IORR Stones Vault with their own FileFactory links.
