This is one of the only extant live recordings of Big Star playing in the ‘70s that has not been officially released. It was recorded by legendary Boston-area taper Steve Hopkins, famous for his recordings of Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton among others.
Big Star was opening for Badfinger, and fortunately Hopkins had the foresight to record them. His master cassette went missing somewhere along the way, so the version he put into circulation came from a first-generation back-up copy. The set features several covers, including a rare version of The Kinks’ “Come On Now.” I particularly like the version of “Thirteen” from this show.
We’ve added a note reflecting details included Hopkins’ tape list that this is a recording of the early show that night. He actually taped both the early and late sets by Badfinger, but just the first one of Big Star.
The files from Steve’s original upload were shared with Captain Acid for one of his trademark clean-up jobs to make Steve’s very solid mono recording that much better.
Given the historic importance of this recording, any improvements are welcome indeed.
