nzentgraf talk: do you think I really care
Posted by: gnillor ()

Nico Zentgraf lists two versions of dytirc:

- Do You Think I Really Care I (MJ/KR/RW) -pedal steel version
- Do You Think I Really Care II (MJ/KR/RW) -guitar version

The pedal steel version is widely spread, but I found no guitar version. On the other hand it's not marked as unverified, so it should be available.

Does someone know where to get it?

version I is the well-known version. You can find it on classic bootlegs such as "Claudine - accidents will happen"

Version II was released on "Paris Results". It also have a pedal steel. Keith Richards guitar is clearly different.

What about the two versions of Fiji Jim?

The 2 I have seem to be the same except one of them has extra Guitar.

To "Do you think I realy care":

I have for example the version on Accidents will happen CVBS 033 and count in "one two three for" and the one on paris results DAC 103 with count in "one two one two three for". But to my ears, they seem to be the same version maybe with different lineage and differently processed. Especially the stereo separation seems to be different.

But if you listen to the guitars after aproximately one minute, where Mick sings highway with laughter, i hear the same guitar in the middle, the same steel on the left and finaly the same third guitar more or less on the right.

Maybe someone can point out, where you can clearly hear a different guitar playing?

I'm referring to Fiji Jim. Right at the beginning. Send me an email and I'll send you the 2 versions I have.

Nick, probably you don't have the right files.

Take these and you'll find there's a relevant differenve between the two versions.

The two versions of Fiji Jim are clearly distinguishable.

And at the moment, you realy shouldn't care about the versions of dytirc. Maybe the real version II is available for ico, but not for people as normal as you and me.

I think talking about 2 songs at the same time is getting confusing here so let me clarify.

Fiji Jim - I listened to the 2 files you posted and already have those. Yes I do hear an extra guitar. I hear it right from the start.

Do You Think - I have 3 versions, different times and they all sound the similar to me. They are 6:05, 6:12, 6:19. I'm gonna put on some headphones and listen but I would think the guitar version would be obvious compared to the Pedal steel.

D. Hoffmann only lists one outtake version of Do You Think in his Weissbuch Recording Index. Well, he is not infallible but usually he is correct.

Yes midnighrambler, DH only lists 1 (one) outtake.

The sound on classic "Claudine" is so different to "Paris Results" !
I need / I'll do another A/B.

Thanks.

I tried to figure this one out before. The Ultimate Guide lists the Paris Results version as "a different mix replacing most of the pedal steel". I hear pedal steel throughout both mixes.

Bottom line- they are both similar, if not the same. Although most releases were tweaked in some way to sound different. If anyone can hear any markers that can distinguish between the two, please post.

I have notes from 2011 from nico's homepage. Back then, he already lists two versions of dytirc, although in 1978 instead of 1977.

So at least, it seems like it doesn't have something to to with the recently showed up sources of that period (like the foxes in the boxes version of summer romance, that wasn't on nico's in 2011)

At the moment, I think it just has something to do with the different sound as LiveAtHidepark noted.

Not for nothing but the released version on Some Girls Deluxe has much less Pedal Steel than any of the outtakes.

Nick, can you give infos about your 3 versions : from bootlegs (wich ones) ? tape sources ?

Girls, Pills & Powder 6:05
Accidents Will Happen 6:12
Place Pigalle Vol.1 6:19

I have no bootlegs on CD or LP. Anytime I download a boot I compare the songs I already have and if any sound better I replace it. Those files are in a folder sorted by year. The titles you see come from metadata embedded in the file.

Did Keith play on this at all?

I think Mick plays the acoustic, Ronnie plays the pedal-steel and Keith plays the electric.

This is the lineup, according to timeisonourside.com. But I'm not sure if there are two acoustics in there?

Line-up:

Drums: Charlie Watts
Bass: Bill Wyman
Acoustic guitars: Keith Richards & Mick Jagger
Electric guitar: Ron Wood
Pedal steel guitar: Ron Wood
Vocals: Mick Jagger
Piano: Ian Stewart

I don't hear 2 acoustic guitars, only one.
I hear Keith on electric guitar, not Ronnie.

But I can be wrong.

And, Dandelion, you are a guitar player, so what do YOU hear ?

I always thought that the steel guitar and the electric guitar were Ronnie. It's his rhythm style.

Something about the acoustic tells me that it isn't Keith there, either.
