New CD set of the Hawai'73 shows...
Posted by: dcba ()
Date: December 23, 2014 00:49

here's the blurb :

"4CD THE ROLLING STONES - TROPICAL THUNDER
Newly discovered excellent-quality master tapes.
All tracks recorded live at The International Sports Center, Honululu, HI, 1973:
January 21st (Discs 1-2)
January 22nd Early Show (Disc 3)
January 22nd Second Show (Disc 4)
Final shows with Mick Taylor on American soil.

This has absolutely nothing to do with In Exotic Honululu on Contraband / Ruthless Rhymes (worst bootleg in history) and is of far superior quality than the most recent upgrade that came out in 1997.
Comes with 2 separate booklets: the 1973 Tour book replica (16 pages) and our
own 28-page full-colour booklet."

There's 99% of chance it's the usual bootlegger BS (= no upgrade) but that bit "far superior quality than the most recent upgrade that came out in 1997" raises my interest.

has anyone heard it?

Just the excellent Master JEMS torrent of a couple years ago...but that was only one show. Perhaps the "far superior" refers to only that show and the other two are same old...

Don't be surprised Falo : have you ever noticed the words "bootlegger" and "bullshiter" have the same exact number of letters? (10)

eye popping smiley

Is that face for the price tag? US$285 for a set of CDs is crazy. But I never buy CDs anyway; only vinyl LPs.

Let me translate 'far superior quality than the most recent upgrade that came out in 1997': For the January 21st show they used the first gen D&D/JEMS tape and for the two other shows it's the same sources as used by VGP (in similar soundquality).

Thx to the generosity of Hj3009 thumbs up I managed to listen to this one : I can't remember how the old VGP titles of the Jan. 22 shows sounded but on this set they sound pretty good.
Alas there are sound problems on SFM for both shows (a mastering issue?) and regarding the 10pm one Mick Taylor is still very low in the mix.

Thanks for the info.

But thanks to Hervé too, even if his post did not come up with any real new stuff,
I had a heck of a time listening to these concerts again!

Re the late show uber-fan Watchit notices on the Dime page "that this is the exact same recording and approximately the same quality as VGP-212, "Blue Hawaii." If you have that, you probably don't need this"

Ben Fong-Torres said the 3rd show was the best. Mick has laryngitis! I've never been able to listen to the 3rd show more than once straight through but what is amazing is Mick recovers his voice during the show, at least to the point that he can growl on pitch.
