Help! I need to know how to convert a WMA file into an MP3 file
Posted by: Charles ()

Hello Stones Junkies,

Would anyone know how to convert a wma file from the sugarmegs site into a more user-friendly mp3 file? I have a dvd to audio ripper software. Will that do it?

By the way, what is the purpose of using wma files if they are so large and unwieldy? Does anybody know?

Thanks guys for letting me know!

Cheers,

Charles:

If your using itunes, it will convert WMA files to MP3 files automatically when you import the songs. Before you import, you need to set the import default setting of itunes to match the bitrate of the WMA files; otherwise, the resulting MP3 file will be unneccessarily large.

It doesn't work for me, it doesn't import. Nothing happens. Shit.

Charles,

Try downloading Exact Audio Copy it's a shareware program that will convert WMA to mp3s.

...I often use a nifty little program called ImTOO MP3 WAV Converter which supports converting many different file types to .mp3 or .wav, including .wma, which has always worked very well for me... here's a zip file containing the installation application (for version 2.0.35.415) - plus a text file with a username and serial number to register the installed program...

...for any further info about the program, check out this site...

...good luck with it...

Thank you Crash! I downloaded it. Once the sugarmegs opens up at 5pm EST today I will test it out. I didn't see an instructions page but it doesn't look complicated to use. I just bought the IM TOO dvd to mp3 cd audio software a couple of nights ago for 30 bucks. I am wondering if this same company is good to use for ripping dvd to dvd.

I use a 'free' program called GoldWave.

Download here:
[s53.yousendit.com]

Unzip all files to a folder f.ex. C:\Program Files\GoldWave
Then start C:\Program Files\GoldWave\patch.exe

And make a shortcut to the desktop C:\Program Files\GoldWave\goldwave.exe

The I use the Batch conversion (File -> Batch conversion)
Choose source file(s), File type (destination) and destination folder.

Then press begin and wait. Works just fine.

And it has a lot of other great features too.

Thank you Tekumseh! I will try it. The other one is a trial version only which allows only 5 downloads.

Charles:

Are using itunes ???

If so, you can import WMA files into itunes and they will convert to MP3's provided you have set the Preferences (Importing tab) correctly.

flowerchild:

I always thought it had to do with the way you had set the importing options under EDIT -->> PREFERENCES ---->> IMPORTING; however , reading the help, what does matter is that you are using Windows Media Player 9 or later. If you are using the correct version of Media Player, then itunes will automatically convert your WMA file into whatever you set as the importing encoding type (eg: MP3 or ACC).

Thank you Takumseh, it seems to be working nicely. Mother, I don't have iTunes. I went looking on the "internets" for it but apparently it costs like almost 20 dollars a year to join. I figured that Takumseh's link was free. ITunes advertises as being ad free. I wonder if that means that Goldwave may have pop-ups and ads.

Now, I just need to figure out how to chop up the big block of a sugarmeg show into individual songs.

I don't know if GoldWave is free...
But it has no adware/spyware and that kind of crap. Maybe you need some codecs to use it right.

It can also be used to split big WAV/MP3 files. As when you download full album in one mp3 file, you can split it with this. But it takes some time to figure out how to do it.

I always use this to record from my vinyl records.

Charles:

Check IORR for a recent thread (April 23, 2006 started by "dmay" re hard drive / sugarmegs question) where I provide comments on parsing the large WMA file into individual songs.

Actually the WMA files on sugermegs.org are fairly small because the music files are encoded at 40 KB/s.

Yes, that's right, 40 KB/s.

You'll need to cherrypick from the list, first sampling the quality of a particular concert before you spend the time chopping up the large music file.

I did for three concerts and it took me a long time.
