the format: .M4A is the extension for MPEG4-audio
apple started to use the .M4A in iTunes, iPod, ipod-store and quicktime
so the format M4A = MPEG 4 Audio = audio compression format
big audio loss: as mp3, depends on the bitrate you use.
better or worst than mp3: don't have a definite answer. there are almost as many theories as there are people, if you read some threads.
there seems to be a strong consensus that 128 AAC is better than mp3@160,
to my ears m4a@256 sounds same/better than mp3@320.
