Today's music ain't got the same soul...
Date: October 20, 2007 23:06

Whilst in deep discussion of who paid for lunch, Bono or Mick,

I found it interesting how Mick casually shrugged of the question of how did the Beatles & Stones write so many songs during that period (1960's). He made it sound so simple and routine. If that's true, why did they stop writing songs of that calibur, huh?

Perhaps the music from the 1960's was driven by some divine eretheral force?

Some say it was the drugs.
Hmmmm...

Discuss.

I think there was a healthy competition between the bands in those days, which made them produce better and better songs. And in those days the groups had to release at least one album and four singles a year, which made them very creative and focused. As Mick Jagger said somewhere, "when you don´t have the pressure to produce anything it´s very easy to become lazy".

i dunno if it was the drugs... or the pressure...
but it's actually 100% different these days when
the world became so superficial.. maybe they just
can't find the feeling... or the inspiration...

absolutely right.

and better technology invented 24 track recording, 48 track recording, 96 track recording...and better contracts invented more artistical freedom....

...when the pressure is gone and an artist can spend four or more years for recording of an new album with the availability of endless overdub and mixing possibilites one thing obviously went out of the window - the focus on the music.

My view in short:

All doors are open.
What can a kid of Iggy Pop or Jim Morrison make to shake us? Grandkid? etc.. ?

And: There were terribly loads of crap made yesterday too; we just tend to forget or abject'em.. Middle Of The Road, Rush, the Rubettes, Adam Ant.

Most creative artists only have a limited period where theyre at their most inspired. Thats quite natural. They're hardly alone there.

Getting rich and complacent could be another reason.

Yeah, according to my Dad the best music/art was driven and created by hunger.

And if that don't knock ya then buckle down with Jagg's pleading soul
vocals onUnder The Radar esp where he climbs back outta that blaze
of noise to sneer out those lines...

You've been my jewel

Ha - good reminder, Rockman - Under The Radar is such a great one, it would have been the highlight of ABB, together with She Saw Me Coming. As of now, it's the highlight of some slag from the bluecrank...!

I think rock and roll was closer to the source then. The musicians grew up listening to blues, country, pop, soul, and melted it together. Now rock bands grew up listening to rock bands with little feeling for where it really comes from.

Mick had a good point in a recent interview, that is, if one were to lump all Stones songs together without knowing the time period during which they were recorded many of the new ones would do very well. Of course sound quality makes it easy to tell the differnce but in fairness I think he's right.

I might get a lot of flack for this, but I think this is closer to the reason:

Perhaps the music from the 1960's was driven by some divine eretheral force?

In my opinion, it wasn't just the music, it showed up in everything. It wasn't just the Stones and the Beatles, it was a lot of other writers too. Andbooks, and politics and just people.

People were reflecting what was going on around them and in the 60's a lot was going on. I'm glad to hear there are some good songs being written now so I'll try to check those out.

There are very few artists today who understand song-writing and approach it like a craft; my personal favorites TODAY are obviously Mick, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Dylan ( even though I hate his delivery these days), George Harrison up until he died, and Clapton. Back in their day, The Beatles reigned supreme as did Jagger/Richards and the Kinks. I am speaking lyrically; these artists' songs were vignettes, little portraits of life at that time. Today, we have what?? .50 cent?? You must be joking!! Kayne West? PLEASE!!! The top 50 is comprised of hip hop, rap trash or garbage like American Idol contestants....a sad commentary of today's music scene, I think.
