To me, Springsteen is the last of the 70s rock stars. He is rooted in a different time, when people thought that music could change the world. I think you could trace a direct line between him and Creedence, in that they are both very much uniquely American bands. I went through a long period of not liking him, but I have warmed to him in the past few years.

You know, you may want to spend a little time with Magic. It's really not the dud I thought it was. Thing's got fire and a fuse. Slow burner though.

Surprised Gazza didn't have a comment for Magic, unless it's on another Thread or this one was too far down already.

Who is that other guitarist on stage with them for this tour, other than Bruce, Gary (bass) Steven, Nils and Patty?

That's Soozie Tyrell, who plays violin and played on the Rising and Seeger Sessions tours.

BRUCE Springsteen's first album with the E Street Band since 2002's "The Rising" produces familiar results. His "Magic" bows at No. 1, having sold 335,000 copies in the U.S. during its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the eighth time the veteran rocker has topped the U.S. pop chart.

25 songs, 4 tour premieres including a live debut for 'your own worst enemy' and only the 2nd ever performance of 'Cynthia' (played as an audible) - AND 'Incident on 57th street' thrown in for good measure ...

Radio Nowhere
Night

Magic
Reason to Believe
Adam Raised a Cain
She's the One
Livin' in the Future
Cynthia
The Promised Land
Town Called Heartbreak
Incident on 57th Street
Your Own Worst Enemy
You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)
Devil's Arcade
The Rising
Last to Die
Long Walk Home
Badlands

Emcore :
Girls in Their Summer Clothes
Thundercrack
Born to Run
Dancing in the Dark
American Land

Cant wait to hear this one....

Not sure if its been posted over here yet, but partydollmeg posted a link for this video clip over on Rocks Off.

'Reason to believe' from Hartford 2nd October (tour opener). new ZZ Top-style arrangement with some great harp playing.

Except "The Rising" sold 525,000 the first week, 1/3 more than "Magic."

Has anybody else noticed the god-awful production on "Magic"? Everything is buried and distorted. I thought it was just the nature of the leaked download but I listened to the album on 100g vinyl, on my Thorens turntable, and it sounds just as bad - albeit in audiophile quality.

I like the music but the sound is bad... Exactly how R put it

yes as to some of the production approach; weird...on very first thread re: alla this several days or a week ago or something...someone was kind enough to leave a link where we could preview the whole album from a radio station website which was previewing the entire thing...prior to general release.

...i liked some of the songs and performaces very much right off the bat but did notice, and comment, that the drums seemed oddly buried and indistinct and i was suprised that such an anal guy about all apspect of the recording process, would just let the drums turn into kinda low level mush, comparatively with the great and present drum sound that max already has, and that they have on a lot of their albums...

i haven't spent a ton of time with the album yet, and that won't sink it for me, i don't think...but thank goodness someone else heard that too and commented, i wonder about meself sometimes...cause the drums seems mushy and indistinc to me; and mixed 'commercial low' like a pop country song...actually they are getting hipper to the crack of the snare in nashville finally....

something weird; how did they miss that and why? it had to be concious decision to make it more commercial or something? i don't get it...
one or two tracks the drums are snapping, but that's it. imho.
hmmmmmmm...strange.

I thought that this Susi miight be the same vilonist who played with bruce back in 75. and featured on an auld favourite bootleg of mine "trust your car to the man who wears the star" from that period. an upgraded and now under the name "Prodigal Son @ The Main Point" but digging it out that was a Suki Lahav , ah well,

Suki Lahav emigrated to Israel many years ago. Soozie Tyrell is a friend of Patti Scialfa's, who has played on and off with Bruce since the early 90s.

The music itself is excellent, IMHO, but the mastering, ouy vay! It almost sounds like Phil Spector was around the studio. I realized after a couple listens that what I didn't like about the CD was all on the Production end. What a shame, musically and lyrically it's great (repeating myself).

Then again Rolling Stone gave it 5 stars, but then again Rolling Stone would give any CD with 5 or more anti-war songs 5 stars. Four anti war tunes, assured 4 stars, etc. How Rolling Stone (the magazine) continues to go down hill is another topic.

Each to their own, but unless hes waving a gun around, I'd have considered that a good thing. Wasnt that one of the things that people liked about 'Born to run'?

Gazza, you are probably right, but then again, Born to Run (the song) was never one of my favorites. (But I do like She's the One", go figure)

Yes, the Stone shave a "suit" on their hands re: the Cult's "Dirty Little Rockstar" (aka "Undercover"). But still a great song and great CD - AND GREAT live song. Go see them (not Bruce)

BTR had layers upon layers of cleanly recorded insturmentation giving it that big wall'o'sound. "Magic" is layers and layers of p*ss-poorly, distorted and unevenly recorded insturmentation. Most of the sax solos sound like they were recorded to a cassette with a microphone from a telephone receiver. Somewhere in that record Bruce has some guitar solos too. I think.

This would appear to be the UberBoss' new business model: Crank 'em out quick, cheap and dirty to collect on that big new contract SONY had no business giving him at this stage in his career. Rumor has it there's another album (not ESB per se) in the can and in the pipeline for Spring '08.

I was prepared to hate the new album and to write Bruce off. I was highly disappointed with The Rising - bleak subject matter, for sure. I did like a few "Skin To Skin", "Mary's Place", etc.

However, the new CD is excellent to me. I really like "Summer Clothes" and "Future" - also "Radio". A couple of complaints - poorly recorded (too much highs, low mix of Bruce's voice, too clean, too many synths), but much better than anything since at least "Tunnel Of Love".

"Summer Clothes" would be a great song for Brian Wilson to cover.

"No Anchovies, Please"

I think people should listen to Bruce's new disc more. It is very, very good.

I've listened to some of the new tour boots, and the new material is fantastic live.

Just one example: Gypsy Biker.

Gypsy Biker is quite powerful live. It starts out with haunting harmonica and lyrics, then builds powerfully, the lead guitar lifts it forcefully upward. The chorus at the end is incredible.
