RnR HoF--from bad to even worse

For me, moaning about the nominees has long been an annual event. This year takes the cake:

NEW YORK (AP) — Here's something Madonna can really celebrate: a nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Madge joins heartland rocker John Mellencamp, the puckish rappers Beastie Boys and premier dance acts Donna Summer and Chic among the nine nominees for the hall. The five leading vote-getters will be inducted in the annual ceremony March 10, 2008, at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

The other nominees are rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, the original British Invasion combo The Dave Clark Five and surf rock instrumentalists The Ventures.

Still no Small Faces. Faces. Alice Cooper. Flying Burrito Brothers. Joe Tex. Laura Nyro. Delaney and Bonnie. The Turtles. Leon Russell. Rick James. Little Feat. Tommy James and the Shondells. Humble Pie. Guess Who. Joe Cocker. Bobby Womack. the Hollies. Roxy Music. The Jam. and yeah, the Monkees.

All of those people, and I mean ALL of them, are more deserving than this years nominees. Also, still no Jethro Tull, Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, or Genesis.

The Rock Hall is a good museum. They have a nice collection of cool stuff. But as far as who's in it and who's not in it, and how long it takes certain people to get in while other, much less deserving people get in their first year of eligibility, that part of it has become a total joke.

I don't think Leonard Cohen could care less about that R&R museum.
He shouldn't be a part of that crap, IMO

He likely couldn't care less, but he's my pick from the list provided (a case of "damning with faint praise," I know). At least Leonard would give an interesting comment if he is inducted - he would be as bemused as anyone. Plus... he's still pretty hot...

Oh I have great respect for Leonard Cohen ! It's just that "R&R Hall Of Fame-award" for him....well that's an arena way below of where he performs.

I think Johnny Rotten had the right idea about the Hall.

Yep - but he'd find it amusing... Had the chance to see him in concert twice when he toured after The Future was released in '92, some of the songs from those shows ended up on his live album in '94. He doesn't move much, and his range is very small, but nobody could take their eyes off him... Generous performer too - gave all of the musicians and back-up singers their solo in the spotlight while he went off stage. And somehow, at his age... still hot!

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is crap. Nice idea, but it obviously became a soulless, ego bloated organization years ago. As stated here by countless others before there are soooo many great bands that have never even been nominated. It ceased being legitimate long ago. It's really sad, but then again the music industry as a whole isn't exactly on the upswing these days either. Who nominates/approves bands for induction anyway? These are the people to abuse if we only knew who they were...

Re: RnR HoF--from bad to even worse

Yeah, they should have a seperate Hall of Fame for "Pop Stars" if they must...
Madonna IS NOT Rock n' Roll !!!!!!

Re: RnR HoF--from bad to even worse

...and that's my point. The inclusion of Madonna was inevitable, but there's never been anything remotely "rock n roll" about her, other than the fact that she was influenced by Bowie to keep changing her look (and that showmanship is more theatrical than musical).

Madonna is a throwback to the pre-rock show-business world. All of her calculated antics are publicity stunts designed to keep her name in the news.

She may be HUGE on an Entertainment Tonight level, but she's just not a rocker.

If you go by the music, then Paul Revere and the Raiders deserve to be in there before her.

Or how about Toots and the Maytals? Or Deep Purple?

I don't even like them...but hell, Chicago has put out more rock records than Madonna--and deserves a slot ahead of her.

Ted Nugent pisses a lot of people off, but it's stupid to boycott him based on his politcal views.

Rather see him there than Madonna.

Most of yo should realize, by now, the the RNR HOF is really the Popular Music HOF. That being the case, people like Madonna (like her or not) should be inducted. You cannot deny her incfluence on music, and she does have some creative genius. Just becuase someone isn't your favourite style, does not mean that they suck.

josh.

I don't deny her influence.

I just don't see the value of it.

Rufus Thomas in my opinion is much more important than her--and deserves to be in.

Same goes for Clarence Carter--who is still alive and doing great shows (saw him last year) and could make an appearance. (The TV show aspect plays a pretty important part in the selection these days)

Just because I don't like someone doesn't mean I don't think they are worthy. I never had any use for Linda Ronstadt--but I'd put her in ahead of Madonna.

Madonna brought back the old Hollywood & Vine show business b.s. She is ANTI-rock n roll. While I understand that the Hall has created a pretty big tent, she is so far outside of the value system that Rock was based on that she doesn't belong.

i agree "who are these people"? It seems to me even more that these are bought (i think the Grammys and Oscars are too) not like with 'cash money' but somehow,.
I mean why esle are bands not in there who should be? like KISS (spare me cuz they suck etc. they still should be in there)

Weeeeelll, IMHO Laughin' Len should be able to make his own decisions without nobody making them for him. And he needs the exposure - after he was robbed by his accountant. Even legends have to buy groceries ;-)

Madonna, Spears, Lohan, Simpson sisters and many other "Pop Stars" are mere products of the industry. Everything is written, coreographed and produced for them. Their main purpose is to show up, look good and perform/dance/lip synch on cue and top the charts.

Real Rock n' Rollers can write and play their own music, look ugly and don't dance much...exception of Mick of course, lol.

Today's music ain't got the same soul, I like that old time Rock n' Roll

Are the Moody Blues in the Rock Hall? I doubt it. The Rock Hall HATES anything that could be termed "progressive" or "art" rock. Pink Floyd was eligible for FOUR YEARS before they got in. I think it took Traffic TEN YEARS to make it!

Moody Blues are not there> Somebody else not there is the Dave Clark 5

Reaching the Top Forty 17 times in just three years, with more appearances on the Ed Sullivan show than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, the DC5 were an enormous pop phenomenon before disbanding in 1970. The Dave Clark Five have sold more than 50 million records worldwide to date."

Depends how wide your definition of 'rock n roll' is. They just call it that because it has a catchy ring to it.

Moody Blues, good call!
They qualify simply because they have a song called "I'm just a singer in a Rock n' Roll Band!"
winking smiley

I never thought of them as progressive or really art rock...more like classical music inluenced psychedelia. Somewhat pop, but with more substance than most.
Hmmm...I wonder what kind of substances? lol

Great band though, saw them 3 times way back when and I would see them again if they came here and played the symphony concert hall.

it is no longer a hall of fame, but rather it is a hall of records.
