Apart from "Born To Be Wild", there is nothing there for us today.
The other stuff sounds extremely dated. They fall into the shadows of Zeppelin and The Stones, something which also groups like Free, Ten Years After, Wishbone Ash and Cream do, today considered.
They were cool back then, and to own some albums of Steppenwolf, really gained some respect, back then.

agreed - but i would personally rather hear them than 'Carol Decker' of tpau' or "dexters" - midnight runners.....the charlatans!

Steppenwolf were a great blues/rock band with a conscience. Great songs like Monster (applies today) Rock Me, Don't Step on the Grass Sam, Sookie Sookie, Snowblind Friend, any many many more.
Michael Monarch was a superb lead guitarist on the first 3 albums, check out his work on 'Your Wall's Too High', 'The Ostrich', 'Sookie Sookie', 'Jupitar's Child', and others (specifically, the lps are "Steppenwolf" ('68), "The Second" ('68) & "At Your Birthday party" ('69) the last being especially underrated.
"Well, let me ask you, what albums by Steppenwolf do you own? Why isn't 'Magic carpet ride' good enough? its a great song.
Sookie Sookie Sue The Pusher check those two out and get back to me.
Why do some slam other bands for no reason at all?"
Unfortunately I`ve chosen to own none of them. I have tried to like them, but I am not able to. I`ve checked some of them out, and even the highest rated, "the Second" isn`t good enough.
Too much blues clichè, too pathetic for today`s ears. I hadn`t expected to hear that from someone that could be called pioners within that kind of music. The same goes for the other groups I`ve mentioned.
I`m not slamming for no reason at all, but because I think I`ve discovered an interesting cultural phenomenon. What was cool then, and in a way ruled their times, sounds today completely naff!
I forgot about "The Pusher". That`s a good one. There are some others too. I think I`ve taped six other songs that I also care about. "Sookie Sookie Sue" is one of them. They all where from a "best of".
Born To Be Wild Magic Carpet Ride Sookie Sookie The Pusher Rock Me Hey Lawdy Mama ....and maybe some others of which I didn't recognized the song titles.
Just saw JK & Steppenwolf at a County Fair. Good Music...bad wigs.
Fully disagree with the early posters, saying they were a one song band. I have 3 of their albums and they have loads of good numbers! Great guitar work, too, along with cool vocals. Must say though, they were not a good live band. Tried them twice-no go. Anyway, to immitate my pal Elmo--"Snow Blind Friend" is a great song! TY HOYT, and Cheers.

I have those 3 LPs along with Live, For Ladies Only & Seven. Agree At Your Birthday Part is very underated. Many great songs as have been mentioned already. They were also kind of like the house band for Hugh Heffner's short lived "Playboy After Dark".
Born to be wild The pusher Don`t step on the grass, Sam Sookie, sookie sue Your wall is too high Jupiters child Snowblind friend Ride with me It`s never too late
These are spread on different albums. I have so far never heard a really GOOD Steppenwolf album.
Steppenwolf was NOT a one hit band. They actually had SEVERAL top 40 singles. I find their retrospective/greatest hits records to have MANY excellent songs. Something for everyone I think. Personally Born to Be Wild is one of my least favorite tracks anymore. Definitely over-played.
FYI: In John Kay's most recent interview he cites their record contract which required 2 albums of new material per year the main reason that Steppenwolf fell off in sales. He said that after the first 4 or 5 records they were basically "spent" song-writing wise. Think about it. It makes sense. NO ONE puts out 2 albums a year of new material anymore. That was INSANE. Not only was that un-realistic but the band was quickly over-exposed. Oh well, live and learn I guess.
