I often hear Keith refer to his 5 string open chord tuning.

Surely it's the Low E string that he does away with.

Yes, I guess I meant the low E string tuned down to a D, it least that is the way I play an open G when using all 6 strings.

It's also comon to have 2 low G strings in open G - thats how I play it.
a low D gets quite droning and annoying, IMO.
