Music Bootlegger jailed for 20 months

At Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday Robert Langley,58, was jailed for 20 months. He pled Guilty to three trademark and two copyright infringements after Jimmy Page gave evidence for the Crown. The Crown is also looking to strip him of assets totalling £250,000 in a proceeds of crime hearing later this year. This information from this morning's "Herald".

I saw this guy getting arrested at a record fair in 2005. He had a fair smattering of interesting Stones stuff at his stall. I've noticed that a lot less bootlegs have been on sale at such events since.

Seems a very severe sentence to me. I'm sure a lot of you out there have bought bootlegs, so what do you think? Was the person who sold you Brussels Affair such a serious criminal that he needed locked up?

Thats about what the sentence they get for raping a child where I live...

Honestly, imho the artists - or whoever owns the rights - deserve protection against copyright violations so the sentence may be just o.k.

Yes, I have bought countless bootlegs myself over the years so you may call me a hypocrite, but who is not?

What about 1-2 months instead of 20?

Re: Music Bootlegger jailed for 20 months

Jimmy Page suing someone over copyright infringements is about the most hypocritical thing I've ever seen anyone do, considering the amount of songs Led Zeppelin stole.

Real die hard music fans tend to buy both official releases and boots. There's been talk over the years that Keith has given a few unreleased/live recordings away to be bootlegged such as the Sounds Interchange Studio material recorded March 12-13 1977 plus the odd live concert.

>> Jimmy Page suing someone over copyright infringements <<

Jimmy Page wasn't suing this guy - Page was a witness. (it's a criminal trial, right?)

And Jimmy Page did state in court that he didn't mind fans "trading" material, but objected to people selling it!

On a related topic, I heard a strong rumour last week that the Led Zep reunion will indeed take place next year....

teleblaster,

Is this the guy that was arrested coming back from, or going to, a record fair in N. Ireland, who does (or did) all the Scottish record fairs?

If the musicians don't want their work put out in bootleg form then MAYBE they should put it out officially in superior form. If LADIES AND GENTLEMEN was out in a top notch "official" package (such as the treatment GIMME SHELTER has recieved) how many of us would also buy a crappy bootleg version ? Zero to none I would guess.... Speaking of Page/Zeppelin I had to buy an inferior copy of Zep Live at the Seattle King Dome 1977 (double DVD Pro Shot) from Amazon since Page has refused to clean it up and release it - yeah, it's not the best Zeppelin show ever but how many pro shot concerts of Zeppelin in the 70's are there? I'm talking about stuff Page left off of the Zeppelin Double box set....not much (but I can say that the 1977 American Tour had ZERO representation on the box set - could have AT LEAST included the very unique 30 minute acoustic section of the show (GOING TO CALIFORNIA, BATTLE OF EVERMORE, MYSTERY TRAIN (Elvis), DANCING DAYS (Rare - short version), BLACK COUNTRY WOMAN, BRON-YUR-STOMP). If one can't get it officially boots are the only other way. The artist doesn't loose any money because they are not offering the same product so there is no competition. My Advice?? Mellow out Jimmy, you're more "set for life" than an effing SUPER LOTTO winner.......

No, 4SW, that's a different guy. Have heard that the Inland Revenue are now getting into him for huge amounts of (allegedly) unpaid tax. Guy that got sentenced is, I believe, English and was only in Glasgow for Record Fair.

Don't know if he was targetted (which I suspect) or just plain unlucky as there were plenty stalls selling bootlegs until the uniformed cops arrived. Seemed like a nice guy (as is the other guy you mention).

My friends brother in law was killed and the guy got 18 months who did it.

If you don't want it bootlegged, release. If you don't have it put out an official version by copying the boot.

It's not because you own something - or the copyrights thereto - that you HAVE to release it "or else"... If you don't want burglars to your house, put it on sale?

I understand artists getting upset about studio out-takes being bootlegged - but recordings of live performances where they have charged 100's of pounds for tickets to the original gig and the artist has no intention of releasing?

How about jailing the Stones themselves a few months for hoarding their greatest live stuff from their hard core fans and handling their legacy in such a lousy way. That'll teach 'em!

The smart thing to do is the pixies/pearl jam/peter gabriel (is it restricted to artists beginning with 'P' i wonder) and just make the shows, warts and all, available for sale/download almost immediately afterwards.

the kinds of fans who are going to pay money for that kind of show are most likely the kind who won't be too bothered at a fluffed intro to a song!

To me only counterfeit stuff is a real problem and should be looked after.

There will always been boots in whatever form. And they are mainly bought from huge fans who have all the official material anyway! But want more and special (live) stuff!

Was the guy caught before? Was he warned?

I knew a guy here in the USA who was nabbed twice at Record Fairs selling CD's and Videos. He was in jail once and the charges eventually dropped. He acted like the Feds were a bunch of clowns and could not get a case together. He kept appearing at fairs and did mail order and during that time he was being monitored.

Eventually his house was raided, IRS notified, CD's-Videos and the devices used to record and duplicate them were all taken away and eventally bulldozed over for the media.

He also spent 18 months in Prison + fines. He had a chance to get out of the business a couple times and when adised to do so...laughed.

This guy had been a target for the B.P.I. for years, he was big in the 90's in the days of the gray area boots but nowadays he was scraping a living doing small town record fairs. Jimmy Page said in court that he cannot do anything about bootlegs in Japan the law there is different and he does not but bootlegs he takes what he wants from stores....he also reckons that he did not know that there was a tapers section on one of the Page and Plant tours...............sure Jimmy.....selective memory. If you read the book by Clinton Heylin the guy who has gone to prison was given the name Mr Toad in that tome.

Jimmy said that he did not know there was a taper section at the 1995 Page/Plant shows?

I was at a couple of those shows. The tapers had microphone poles, etc..right behind the soundboard. It was a designated area that you had to buy a ticket for from the venue box office.

Keith also owns plenty of Stones bootlegs. He said in an interview on Toronto radio (which was a bonus disc on the TSP live boot from an Xpensive Winos show in 93) that he was doing Gimme Shelter because he'd heard his guide vocal version from the Let It Bleed sessions on a bootleg.

I don't actually think The Stones really care about bootlegs - probably why they're dragging their feet about an official outtakes release.

20 months - he'll do about half of that. It's completely ridiculous in this age of downloading. If anything he should just get fined and that's that.

This stuff really pisses me off, and Page should be ashamed of himself. From what I've read Pagey was involved in this conviction from the start. He was the reason this came to court and he gave evidence against the man. Now someone is serving jail time for providing a service.
The same thing happened recently in Glasgow when my favourite bootleg dealer got busted by the Sunday Mail. He worked at the Barra's market, and he was the only person I trusted to have decent recordings of all the bands that played in Glasgow. Good quality stuff (god I sound like a toker!) for £6.00 a disc or £10 for a double. He wasnt selling dodgy counterfeight chart albums.
Jimmy Page is worse than Lars Ulrich. At least Lars never got anyone jailed.
As someone else pointed out ...Led Zeppelin ripped all the blues guys off and claimed the songs as their own. Now that IS criminal

A guy was selling t-shirts emblazoned with unauthorized Rolling Stones tongues... and he got 69 days in jail.

What about the Sister Morphine label? I know the guy behind it had the Feds come to his door and they didn't even make a big deal about it.
