Mick Taylor - What CD to recommend?

I must admit I don't no much about what Mick Taylor did after leaving the Stones.
So I would like to ask the folks who know better than I what album/CD do you recommend.

If there would room for just one, i would strongly recommand this one :

STRANGER IN THIS TOWN - June 1990

And if there was only one track i would go with Red House......on that one

A Stone's Throw.

V good song-writing. Much variety of style. Exquisite playing. You have to like a jazz/blues flavour to your music.

far better than the Stones 90s product, IMO

he hasn't got much to choose from studio album wise - just the two, but if you're a fan, then his first one (Mick Taylor, Columbia; 1979) is well worth getting - his vocals arent amazing, but they are pleasant to listen to (very 'youthful') and he can obviously be relied upon to deliver on guitar!

Leather Jacket (nice opener, in a Stonesy style, i was expecting him to deliver a solo on this one, but dissapointingly it never comes)
Alabama (nice acoustic and slide work; lyrics a bit dodgy but hey ho)
Slow Blues (does what it says on the tin, nice bluesy instrumental..awesome tone)
Baby I Want You (soppy title, soppy lyrics but again, the instrumentation is great)
Broken Hands (yeah this is what im talking about! good rock n roll with some nice slide and a very MT-era Stones solo)
Giddy-Up (cool instrumental, again showing his guitar prowess)
S.W.5 (sort of ballady- then uptempo number)
Spanish
A Minor (like a fusion in two parts - his tone could slice through butter, some really fluid fast breaks on guitar too. really cool)

Then there's "Too Hot for Snakes" with Carla Olson which I'd get simply for "Sway" (which was hanging round on the Buy/Sell/Trade bit at one point); his work is JAWDROPPING. the outro section goes on for ages, and ive never heard him work out like this on much else. it left me thinking...Taylor is THE man!

plus, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Reunion Concert 1982 is worth a listen if you want to hear Taylor get free reign to do all the blues/slide workouts he wants

if Open G finds this thread, he is THE man too recommend you Taylor stuff!

Phil,
Here is my assessment:

Mick Taylor (Great studio album with in my opinion some classic tracks)
Stranger In This Town (Very good live album with some nice blues covers)

If you combined the best tracks from these two albums, I reckon you'd have a killer album.

Stones Throw (Very good album, but less Stonesy sounding than the previously mentioned albums)

Too Hot For Snakes (with Carla Olson) some great tracks especially the live version of Broken Hands. This is however in equal parts a Mick Taylor/Carla Olson album.

Once in a Blue Moon (Gerry Groom album) with lots of Mick Taylor guitar work. Not bad.

Live at the 41 Below Club (Not bad but not as strong as Stranger In Your Town)

Personally I would highly recommend somne live Bluesbreakers '81/82. There is a bootleg of the Capitol Theatre where Taylor plays some jawdropping blues guitar. In my opinon easily on par with his greatest work with the Stones.

Myself, I'd recommend Dylan's REAL LIVE as an example of Taylor playing every bit as good as he did on YA-YA'S.

I'd suggest Stranger in the Town as well. Personally I think his studio albums are very so so, but live he is great. For studio stuff I'd check out these three John Mayall albums, featuring Taylor.

Crusade
Blues from the Laural Canyon
Bare Wires

Great blues albums and Taylor plays some cool guitar. Real Live with Dylan also has some great Taylor stuff on it. Other than that ocik up some of his live shows, there are lots of good soundbaords out there.

Yeah, Dylan's REAL LIVE is a good one. Saw Taylor with Dylan on tour, he was great.
I don't listen very much to his solo-work, the songwriting isn't very good in my opinion.
My favourite recording besides his work with the Stones is Mayall's Blues from Laurel Canyon... he's absolutely great (at the age of 17)!

The Capitol Theatre show is on an official DVD, Jammin with the Blues Greats. Taylor is fantastic on that one. At ~$9.95, it's less than the cost of an official CD and you don't need to watch the video.

Thanks for all your input here. It's really helpful.
Just got the DVD "Jamming with the Blues Greats". Top playing there.
Albert King is one of my fav. blues players too. Marvelous tone and phrasing he had.

You know I just picked up Carla Olson's Ring Of Truth simply because Taylor was on it - he plays on the majority of the tracks. The highlight for me here was the 12 minute version of Winter that closes the album. I was moved almost to tears at how friggin amazin he sounded. Don't get me wrong I love Ronnie to death and think he fits in perfectly in the band, but when you hear Mick Taylor play you realize once and for all why that period is known as the Golden Age in Stones history. And even at his age now, the man is still a flat-out genious. I would love to see him live.

That's great you love it, VoodooLounge13.
You know, I've been talking with my parents about thet Amsterdam gig with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, and she has been thinking about it for a while, and yesterday evening she told me she ahd no idea how she shoukld manage getting me there and it's unlikely I can go.
But I won't give in, I'll try again tonight. I HAVE to be at that show!!! No way I can miss that!! Please, cross your fingers for me.

I always love "Walking With Mick" from "IT'S NEVER TOO LATE" released in 1981.

And fyi, here's a website created by a Japanese MT expert.

Billy Preston's "Live European Tour" will be re-released as LP/CD 2 in 1 spec in April.
Strongly recommended and I'm looking forward to this CD.

Thanks for the heads up, I did not know about this DVD. I just ordered it on Amazon.>grinning smiley<

As for MT CD's, I really enjoy both of the Carla Olson collaborations. Sway and and Winter are outstanding Stones covers.

Smokey & CBtaco,

There is a live CD from a Live Bluesbreakers reunion show that John Mayall
released after the DVD show from the CapitalTheatre. Can't remember where this
one was recorded but pick that one up if you can find it!! The last song is:

Have you Heard... Taylor smokes on that tune!!!!

What are the 5 Mayall albums on which Taylor plays? I only come up with 4 before he left for the Stones: Crusade, Diary of a Band Vols. 1 & 2, Bare Wires, and Blues From Laurel Canyon. What am I missing?

That one is called "John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - The 1982 Reunion Concert" and was recorded at the Wax Museum in Washington D.C. It was released on CD by Repertoire Records in 1994.

The gig in Washington D.C. actually took place a day before the Capitol Theatre Show in NJ which was released on Video ("Blues Alive" ) and on DVD as "Jamming With The Blues Greats".

The Wax Museum CD is just the basic band (no special guests), so you get to hear more of Taylor's guitar. His playing is of a very high standard consistently on all songs.
1. Hard Times Again 2. You Never Can Be Trusted 3. Howlin' Moon 4. Ridin' on the Santa Fe 5. I Should Know Better 6. My Time After Awhile 7. She Can Do It 8. Lookin' for Willie 9. Room to Move 10. Get Me Some Dollars 11. Have You Heard

In addition to the DC reunion show and the 70th Mayall Birthday concert, Taylor appears on five live tracks (mostly from the '83 European leg of the reunion tour) on Rolling With the Blues (or something like that), a 3 CD set released in the UK (I believe on Shamrock Records).

Taylor has played on one or two songs on a number of Mayall releases from the 60s through the present. There are discographies at micktaylor.net, micktaylor.free.fr and nzentgraf.de.

Perhaps one of these days Taylor will open up _his_ vaults and arrange for the official release some live shows that _he'd_ like to be remembered for.
