My only complaint, if you can call it that is including " Let's Work". OH MY GOD, to think that I actually DISLIKE something Mick did, but I do dislike this piece. I also prefer " Hard Woman" to " Don't Call Me Up" but that is a slight complaint. I can't wait to see it because I have all of it SOMEWHERE and this organizes all of those videos and bits of tape I have saved through the years! I am so glad that he included " Old Habits Die Hard" because for me, this song is incredibly under-played and overlooked. It is one of the best vocal performances of his life. Very moving; I bought the sound track for Alfie and I've worn it out; the partnering with Dave Stewart is amazing. Wish they'd do more projects together.

I would have loved to see Too Far Gone on there.....actually, that one would have made a great Stones song. And definitely Say You Will and Throwaway should have been on there too.

I truly will never understand the marketing people.

A best of the stones makes sense. But Jagger made only 4 and 1/2 solo discs, all available for something between 2 and 4 dollars each, of which one is almost completely unlistenable. What's the need of a best of?

They won't think it will sell more than Goddess did?

On the other hand, they dug Cooks out of the vaults, which I doubt very much was Jagger's idea, so there must be someone with brains in there.

Why not go further? We know, because we have them, that there are some very god unreleased stuff that only needs a quick polish to be ready to serve. Things like Gangster Moll from primitive cool sessions come to mind.

I'll probably rip this to my computer, delete Joy and Let's Work and add Hard Woman, Party Doll, Wandering Spirit, Blue, Ruthless People, State of Shock (Live Aid version with Tina Turner), Say You Will and Lonely At The Top.

it is pretty funny that he (they?) included "Let's Work." I've never heard a positive word about that song since it was released. the thing is, he's caught between the "best of" concept and the "greatest hits." the song was a single and did get some airplay, so he'd be justified putting it on a "greatest hits" collection. but because his solo career has been so small, there aren't enough songs for a "greatest hits," so he has to do a "best of," which makes including something like "LW" hilariously off.

where can I find "Blue," "Party Doll," and "Hard Woman"? I've never heard them.

Blue is the b-side to God gave me everything or Visions of paradise (depends on the version you find)
Party Doll is from Primitive Cool
Hard Woman is from She´s the Boss, there is also a speeded up single version of Hard Woman, sometimes called "Rock Version"

thanks... b-side? was "GGME" released as a vinyl single? or this was a cd single?

The Missing In Action:

1/2 A Loaf

Ruthless People

And I would prefer THROWAWAY over Let's Work anyday...

Oh...and what about "STATE OF SHOCK" w/Michael Jackson...now that would be something as I only have that on a 45 vinyl!

Hmm, great in some ways & crap in others.
The pluses:
Excellent choice to include Memo From Turner, far and away the best solo thing he's done & better than 90% of Stones material. Too Many Cooks is an inspired and surprising choice with a great sound though I've always felt the song is pretty average. The Red Devils inclusion is obviously a bonus & we could have done with more. Don't Look Back was a must IMO. The unreleased Charmed Life sounds potentially the most interesting track. In general I like the breadth of selections which does showcase the variety of styles.

The minuses:
Let's Work & in fact wasting valuable disc space on anything from 'Primitive Cool (the acoustic Rapido version of Party Doll may just about qualify as an exception). Omission of Wandering Spirit & Blue is short-sighted & possibly State Of Shock. Shame not to have included Use Me, Goddess In The Doorway & one of the finest ballads he's ever written Angel In My Heart (am I the only person to love this song?). The biggest crime though is leaving off the avant garde Moog masterpiece: the soundtrack to Kenneth Anger's Invoction Of My Demon Brother (ok this last one really was a joke).

I miss Catch As Catch Can, a great song
I'm Ringing, never released in Germany
and hopefully the long version from Don't Look Back and not the single version.

no, I really like that one too. Their attempt to repeat on Voodoo Lounge, "New Faces," was pretty weak.

Liddas, I know we're supposed to be respectful of others's opinions and I do try, but to be so dismissive about the body of work that Mick has created and to basicly say it's all worthless is pure ignorance.Do you mean to say that on his 4 solo cds you have not found one song that you like!? Hard to imagine, really. I like some of Keith's solo material, not all, but it's all not " unlistenable!" Get real!

..well the great part about Angel In My Heart is that it's one of the few times that as a listner you feel that Mick is sincerely vulnerable and singing in a style that isn't cynical or overtly saccarine just to sucker you in (Angie for example)......I think this is also why I like Godess 'cause I think he tried to get to this similar place with that record.

The point about every album being around for small amounts of cash is well made,
I have not paid full price for a Mick Jagger album ever,I got mine like this
She's the Boss a DJ mate of mine got me the vinyl on release at a massive discount,he on reflection probably got it for nothing, since bought it on cd for £3.
Primitive Cool I bought at a Woolworths sale for £5,there's always bargains at their sales as the never know how to categorise things properly.
Wondering Spirit I won on a Radio show.
Goddess £1 on ebay
Some of the singles off them I have somewhere I had to pay market prices for though, and the Red Devils album was also expensive at the time £12 fourteen years ago.
So I suppose the question is are we going to buy this album or not, course we will, but maybe not at full price LOL

I think he already put out a "best of":
The Wandering Spirit album.

I don't think I have ever said it is ALL unlistenable. I only said that 1 (one) out of 4 and 1/2 is.

As I see it, she's the boss has some truly good stuff on it. Probably its the one I like best. Primitive cool is absolutely awful (with exceptions). Spirit I think is overall good, but slightly overrated here. Despite all the hype for Rubin, I don't like the production at all. Sweet thing is a truly great one though. Goddes has some beautiful ballads - nothing that we have not heard before - but as a whole I wouldn't rate it as masterpiece. Hideaway is great.

I don't think there are " masterpieces" like we saw in the 60's and 70's ( in the style of Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile ) so I guess today's standards may be a bit lower....not sure WHY! It wasn't just the Stones creating masterpieces; the Who and Floyd and many other bands of that era were on fire creatively. I think Jagger's solo material, as a whole, is above average at the very least when you see what's being produced today!! The best part about Mick's material is that he remembers that period of great creativity, having been a big part of it, and that is his standard!

exactly... that's why I'm disappointed that this "Blue" song was only available as a b-side. that means first I have actually to find the single, then probably buy it! forget it... I never pay full price for stones stuff either. you don't have to, as there's much of it around.

The version of Too Many Cooks posted on Youtube is a different mix then the far more known version wich appears on many bootlegs since the seventies.

So there 2 versions of Too Many Cooks around. The Youtube version sounds like a rough mix.

I'm glad it's finally going to be released. One of my all time favourite outtakes.

Also missing is Mick's version of ANGIE with the London Symphony Orchestra from Symphonic Music Of The Stones (beautiful version imho).

And also missing THE LONG BLACK VEIL with the Chieftains.

yeah, that "Long Black Veil" is great. "Angie" is a Stones song, so that wouldn't be a good fit, imo.
