Better live:

Streets of Love
Midnight Rambler
Out of Control
Route 66
Slipping Away (never liked it on album but love it live)

Better in studio:

Gimme Shelter (yes, better than Brussels etc IMO)
Sympathy (again, better than GYYYO even if MT solo is inspirational)
Love Is Strong
Honky Tonk Women

I think In general, the new stuff is always better live. Like ONNYA or Rain fall down, or out of control, ect.

But from back in the old days, most of the stuff was equally good live and in the stuido, just different. 2 examples I can think of though where the live version is much better thant the studio are When the whip comes down and YCAGWYW (from the 70's to early 80s). maybe all down the line also. One of my fave live songs, but thats a close call.

Yes BluzDude, I did indeed mean better as a live recording. A lot of people mentioned Out Of Control and I agree it is wonderful live.

sympathy for the devil is one of my absolute favorite stones tracks, when performed live.

the studio version does nothing for me.

I'm surprised so many prefer Satisfaction live to the studio recording. I'm very much the opposite of that. To me, there's such a feeling to that studio recording that they can't replicate from Jaggers vocal to the guitar sound. They also usually drag the song out too long live.

I'm not much of a fan of You Got Me Rocking, mainly due to the lyrics, but there's a powerful, thundering feeling to it live that makes it much better than on the record. I agree with other that songs like Out Of Control, Saint Of Me and other later era songs are better live.

The studio version of I'm Free is great, but the way The Stones presented that one on the '69 US tour was IMO amazing

Absolutley right on that one.

Certain elemants sound great live - the Flange guitar intro of Beast of Burdon,
The intensity of Rock and a Hard Place and Out of Control.
Streets of Love was really good on the Dodger Stadium recording.

But I want to shoot myself when they play Ruby Tuesday...

The recorded version of "Gimmee Shelter" is hard to beat. it might be the best Stones recording ever. So damn ominous.
