What's The Deal With The New All Warhorse B-Stage ??
Date: July 1, 2007 04:33

The warhorses started creeping onto the b-stage in 2002 with Brown Sugar and now it's to the point where it is 100% warhorses.Sacrilegious.

As long as they have a good mix of warhorses/non warhorses who cares where they are played?

When I saw them last year they did Rough Justice and Under My Thumb from the B stage. Certainly not warhorses.

No,they aren't but,I'm talking about the two most recent shows. The b-stage seems like a great tool to accomplish a better mix.For example,I think Dance Little Sister would work better on the b-stage than on the main stage. Also,She Saw Me Coming or Silver Train could be worked in on the way down. The b-stage was an opening for great vintage songs On the '97/'98 Bridges To Babylon Tour and on the 1999 No Security Tour however they have been moving in the opposite direction lately.People who have been to Stones shows before are being hit with a larger than normal avalanche of warhorses after the KR section.

LOL! I've been waiting for the day to post an ACW icon on this board, but leave it to an Aussie to do so.

Thanks, Rockman. BTW, Traveller was bought from a horse trader in what later became my home state.

I think they play more, or most wahrhorses on the b-stage is because to get most popularity. On the tours in the 90s the b-stage was the club thing. Then they did clubs and so the b-stage wasn't the only opportunity to play such songs. I think now it's working like this: they played brown sugar (or all the others you know) in front of me, that's for the masses you know. I think they don't make setlists or dramtic changes for die hard fans.

Does it ever work though, it's a brilliant move. You should see a show in which they do this, talk about gettin' the crowd going !!

The B stage will be mixed up again. They play a couple of songs every few shows and then they start with some others. I don't think it will be an all warhorse thing the rest of the tour.

you mean infamy?

No, it's not 100% warhorses.
they've done these songs on the european leg of the tour:

it's All Over Now
Respectable
Rough Justice
Get Off Of My Cloud
You Got Me Rockin

I would bet a kick in the junk you never see them play any of these songs on any tour, big stage or B stage.

though I would gladly lose that bet... a kick in the junk would be worth seeing Silver Train or Dance Little Sister.

I doubt it matters in most cases, to be honest. If youre at the back of a stadium and the Stones come out towards you on a b-stage, you're going to get more worked up and excited regardless of what they play. Look at 1998-99 when they were playing Little Queenie, Route 66 and stuff like that. The crowd were still going nuts for those 3 songs. It doesnt matter WHAT they play on a b-stage. Maybe one 'warhorse' and a couple of reasonably well known hits is fine, but three (plus 'Miss You') is a bit of a waste IMO.

Brown Sugar was actually the final song of the 2002/3 arena shows, before the single or double encore. The bowed out after BS and left the arena through a pathway. It would have been weird if it wasn't a classic. The show was set up in a different way with the b-stage set at the end.

actually a warhorse on the b-stage isn't all bad....the band
works the small stage SO differently than the mainstage that
even the 1000th viewing of Miss You seems new and exciting.

I'd prefer more obscure songs for b-stage...but I don't mind
that much. Generally..i think they're doing a better job of
mixing it up lately.

IORR............but I like it!

why should the criteria be based upon what gets the casual "fans" going? the fact is that the b stage, in its original conception, was a place for rarities to get aired. now that was "brilliant." satisaction, er, not so much . . .

this is one of those issues that clearly divides the setlist whiners from the setlist apologists. On other setlist issues, there's a finer whine that seperates the two sides...

I'm not talking about the shows early on in the '07 tour.I'm talking about the two most recent concerts which is why I posted "now".The past two shows did certainly have 100% warhorses on the b-stage.

Who says that you can't play warhorses on the B stage. I think it works well. At the moment they are really mixing it up and playing lots of interesting stuff on the main stage. Playing warhorses on the B stage is great because it engages those at the back of the stadium who really appreciate songs like Satisfaction being played at "their end" whilst the hardcore fans at FOS get lesser well known songs played at the front, nearest to them.

I think the whole concert experience is what counts, not what exact songs are played and where on the stage!
