What kind of question is this? What do I hate about the Stones! on this
board! I don't hate anything about the Rolling Stones. Just think your life
without this band!? The boys have been putting out for 45 years!
I still get excited about seeing new pictures of the Boys.
I still get excited about seeing old pictures of the boys!
My favourite period is a moot point because their whole career is my
favourite period.
To anyone who says they hate the Stones please remove yourself!
For any reason is unreasonable.
I think this a totally dumb question for this board.
Please have more positive output for this incredible band!

What I hate about the Stones....
all of their albums, their looks, their attitude and their wigs.
And basically they copied Beatles in just about everything
'nuff said.

' Hate' goes much too far, as they become an important part of most of us in our lives. But what I clearly don;t like:

- lack of releasing stuff from the vaults (where is that '78 DVD?)
- the ' clean' sound since the SW album / tour incl. the back ground vocalists and Chuck (but thumbs up for his pushing to change the set lists)
- the heavy relying on the war horses . Not needed - if the 'greatest hits' audience does not like it, play indoor venues for real fans.
- the poor play or Ronnie (extreme) and Keith .

Stones wine. The bouquet is pedantic and the mouthfeel is, dare I say, pedestrian.

I hate Lisa Fischer and those shit-singers
Assigned seatings with all those security personnel
And the setlist (sometimes) in ABB shows when they finish the show playing the same stuff:
Honky Tonk Women
Sympathy
Start Me Up
Brown Sugar
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Satisfaction
They should add other songs , they have lots to play..
20 songs is ok
they just need to have varieties as opn Licks tour

wellll, if you're gonna get all mathematical on me gazza...
then yeah...dang...

then again look what you can do with only 3, if you're soul is nestled in the super heavy bedrock
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

i've got to stay away from the 'hate thang' but i do not at all like the way they dropped the ball on filling the bass spot properly...to mess with an essential foundational rhythm element like that and choose a session guy strictly from another genre was not respectful or smart...it smells of something fishy and political, or expedient at the expense of core quality.

and oh yeah, i'd go with monkeyman's first line in the post above this one too...

I think they went that route because Bill is irreplacable. They have a bassist where Bill used to be, but...

Re: What do you hate about the Stones?
Posted by: Beelyboy ()
Date: May 4, 2007 03:31

i know what you mean about bill himself being irreplaceable, and agree...
and i wouldn't expect a carbon copy...but i honestly feel that there are dozens if not hundreds of really great rock and roll bass players who would have an intuitive understanding of the traditions that bill comes from, and (created!)...and would have brought that along with their own feel and personality into the stew...that's my guess, my hope, my bitch i guess...don't know how reasonable it is in the long run...but that's my take on it...

bill's gone and how wonderful to retire happy, healthy with so much accomplished...there are others out there, even some session players, who could have brought a lot more organic roll and boom to the party...imo.
darryl plays competently, sometimes beautifully, always consistently; but he dosen't have that rock rolling feel that could take the band even higher...(while still keeping their glorius chaos rooted down, ala bill or any good rock bass player)

i'm not expecting any personnel changes btw...but going with the flow of the thread...ty HM.

Now a little clarification for some members on the edge or as Lukester would perscribe "standing on the bridge railing" for hate.

There cannot be love with hate and hate does not have to be carved in stone as the abyss of bad thoughts or feelings. I hate a lot of things like rice, coconut, etc... but I dislike those things as well. So it does not really make much difference whether I hate it or dislike it, I still despise it. See, same concept.

I'll bet when most of you all looked at this thread something popped into your mind. So let the animal out and lets hear some negative vibes for a change. After all they are not a bunch of deities.

Sure, I don't like the ticket prices and all. But you know, I love the Stones so much that I'm just happy that they're still around and doing their things. I can't imagine a life without them. They mean so much to me. It's just a great feel to know that they're still there, still alive, touring, recording after soooooo many years. I'm thankful that they're still here.

Well, I love most of their music... In former times the Stones and their music have been kind of religion. Anti establishment, Paint it Black - Vietnam, Gimme Shelter.

So what is being left today? Greedy bustards!

Anything I happen to dislike has one common denominator as their cause. an insatiable obsession with making as much money at all costs. The hunger for it leads to a lack of ambition, business decisions which affect them detrimentally artistically and causes them to compromise the size and content of their shows to cater for a certain audience.

However, in the wider scheme of things, whilst its a side of them that as a fan disappoints and frustrates me, it doesnt come anywhere near to spoiling the enjoyment that the music gives.

Musically, I find nothing thats worth grumbling about or losing sleep over. I dont claim to love it all, but in a 45-year career I've only found one studio album that I genuinely dislike (and that was 40 years ago when they tried to be something that theyre not), but then again I've never expected perfection.

As long as the guitar plays/it'll steal your heart away....

You got a point there, Beelyboy, Stones had more volume - I'll give them that.

It's peasant food. I can't stand the smell of it. However my wife and kids love it, in most variations. Red rice and beans, white rice. YUK YUK.

Gazza,I know everbody like to critiscize the Stones for thier commercialism. But I just went to see Elvis Costello last night. He charged $75 a ticket, did close to 30 songs, less than 10 of which were actually recognizable. His tour is being sponsored by Visa and I just saw him on a Lexus commercial the other day. It seems the once angry punk has conformed quite nicely.

AMEN gazza! i still love their music!

anyone who wants the stones minus all of the extra musicians the backing tracks and the fireworks should watch the toronto licks rehearsals dvd - they're shocking without the crutches!!! while not bad, just bar bandish - not polished

As for the VIP shows and the setlists, either pony up and go or shut up and the setlists, let em play I don't care while i usually just enjoy the moment post keiths set i still like hearing the war horses

That most of you guys do not understand that Brian put that band together. If Brian would not have been there, then NO STONES. That's it. Unfortunately the band itself tend to forget that they had a band member by the name of Brian Jones and that Mick&Keef today take the full credit of putting the band together.... Scary how peoples ideas and written word by current band members can change history....

it's Brians band, has always been and will always be. He was the leader of the band in the beginning, before Mick&Keef went nasty on him...

I dont like the fact that they for the most part rely on an orchestra and a ton of backup singers when i know damn well the four of them plus the bass player can go out there and kick ass all by themselves, and thats not an insult its a compliment

I hate the fact that Mick feels that the need to include a myriad of warhorses at every show is mandatory or else fans would be extremely disappointed. When was this survey actually taken?

Re: What do you hate about the Stones?
Posted by: Edith Grove ()
Date: May 6, 2007 04:25

I'm pretty sure Mick knows what percentage of the audience at each show is a first time or once-a-tour attendee, and I'd bet that figure is in the 90s. It would make sense that the casual fans would want to hear the warhorses.
