I simply checked wih the Amstel by trying to book multiple suits from mid-May to mid-June. They said they couldn't do it because they were full.

Maybe there is another way to confirm?

Well, actually they do pay taxes, but to a country (holland) that has the most convenient rates. Most euro holding companies are based there for the same reason. Blame the stupidity of local governments that don't understand that in certain cases it's better to have a small % of a fortune instead than a high % of nothing.

In 90, they rehearsed in France but started the tour in Rotterdam.
In 99, they rehearsed in Amsterdam but started the tour in Stuttgart.
They have rehearsed in Toronto in 94, 97, 02 and 05 but started elsewhere.

I've known for a while that the Stones organization was registered in Holland, but had forgotten the particular reasons.

Perhaps they will use Amsterdam for pre-tour rehearsals and business planning.

Didn't they meet in Amsterdam a few years ago simply to discuss business and tour plans...?

Probably A.dam as always, then checking out how rusty they are on the big stage three days or so before the opening at Werchter. Good reason for arriving into Leuven early...

which leads to another question:
How many times was the band "smokin'" on Tour opening nights and how many times did they sound - uhm,err, - well "rusty"?

Rusty, well they sounded rusty to me in the States when they started this whole "A Bigger Bang" thing in 2005. Only a few months in and one week off gave us Sway in Columbus, Ohio but an aweful Shattered and She's So Cold.
They had it all together in Denmark last year and a few other places in between and they were 'smokin' at Churchill Downs race track even with the rain. To my ears at least, rusty will be an understatement if Keith if off and Ronnie is sauced up. Thank God for Mick and Charlie holding it together.

See you opening night and let's hope Ronnie stays away from the Stella Artois!

They could also rehearse in Brussels. It's a quite comfortable there ....

My guess is they're teaming up in Amsterdam for business and rehearsals and use Amsterdam as a base for most of the tour, so they don't have to move around a lot. And they love Amsterdam. Probably they'll also use the George V in Paris as a base at some stage... Get the wonderfull book about the hotel - and read the priceless stories about the Stones staying there.

I believe Cohl arranged for U2 to stay at their summer homes in the south of France for their European tour and fly out to each show from Nice airport.

It would make sense to do something similar for the Stones this year given the logistical cost of moving them from city to city every two days.

The price of jet fuel is a problem, but Cohl solved that for U2 by chartering a huge 4 engine turbo prop. cummunter style plane. The stage crews travlled with the stages, but the band arrived after lunch each day, did a sound check, had dinner, played the show and were back in their homes by 1 AM.

Not a bad life if you don't mind the travel.

Bought it the first time I stayed there - in March 2003. Always stay there when I'm in Paris now. They're so good to our boys - and the manager's got several hand written letters from Keith, saying he's sorry he's kept everyone awake, playing in his room all night... Can you imagine?

Any word of a rehearsal site or date yet anyone?
