I believe this more than anything deals with some people's
self-image, their NY-image & some dudes her that have problems with
mature women that rocks.
On the other hand I's like to shake yer hand, Chelsea,
when it comes to that Schaffer dude, who in my ears are just unbearable
(to to mention video-wise).

If you don't like Patti Smith, you don't like--or understand--rock 'n roll.

She's a genius and her last two albums are as good as, if not better, anything she did in the Seventies. No one's output has been as consistantly excellent as Patti Smith's and no one has bought me as much pleasure over the years--other than the Stones--than she has.

As a matter of fact, I have in my will that "Paths That Cross" and "Jackson's Song"--in honor of my late mother--be played at my funeral.

I'm sorry for those who don't "get it." You've really missed out.

Bless you Patti and congratulations. No one last night deserved the award more than you.

If Patti would read here..

She is made out of "parts of men"

No she is the one. The one and only Patti.

well i edited this out because peeps were getting all pissed and hurt feelings.
basically it was satiric and sarcastic and pretty dang critical of smith's appearances last night...and also did not look kindly upon her catalog of achievements. i thought it was kinda funny too...added some balance and perspective...but it's not worth the aggro of fighting on a fan club forum.
i find her pretentious and overwrought...right down to the studied faux-hippie strip tease act that brought her to the skinny tie white shirt look of her debut during that mess of a set...oooh, here i go again...best to stop...not worth the time or trouble of mind. got my dander up to hear her being compared to the catalogs and achievements of the true greats.
and i hate her puerile nader politics too. the exact myopia that leads to the mess we're in now, that she, of course, wants to parade herself as some kind of 'leader' in context...people got the power to turn off that yodeling shriek.
makes the yoko catalog look better and better...certainly more original.

all i'll leave of original post is:

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE????
LISTEN TO THE FIRST TWO DOORS ALBUM AND GET SOME PERSPECTIVE.

I like it. Very tasteful musically and, as always, she can take any song and make it her own vocally. I look forward to the new record as I thought her last one - "Trampin" - was one of her finest in ages.

Feels good, Beely, that I for once
dont need no long speeches for my point of view.
Dont want to choose between the Doors & Patti, I like both.

Nice call Loog. That version of Free Money off of the red album is great. That whole album is very good. Too bad he doesn't play any of that stuff live anymore.

WHAT A BULLSHIT!!!! Beelyboy, you lost all my respect. I am totally fed up with your lenghty narcistic shit. who do you think you are? the future of wisdom or what? BV always asks us to behave but what you hide in your lenghty novels about Patti Smith is pure nonsense which makes my blood start to boil. dont complain that I am not decent because you are not decent too, Im just not hiding it in a thousand words like you. and I mean that in a respectfull rock and roll kinda way too.

alimente; so i'm guessing you disagreed with some of my perspective...
well, we'll both have to get over it...if fact, i'm over it already.

yeah i'm totally offended to see smith compared with the great songwriters that have been mentioned here...sometimes i post with a little reactive passion to stuff that gets to me, just like you just did...

try this bro: relax.

well it does help a little Erik ty. cause i don't really want to piss anyone off...i'd as soon edit the post out than cause a tussle, if peeps find the expression that untoward or so particularly offensive comparatively...i know lottsa peeps disagree with me on this artist...i felt like i should say how i feel anyway...it's just the way i feel about her...i don't think less of anyone personally who disagrees...ty for seeing the humorous edge to the rant.
do appreciate it...alimente usually seems pretty cool to me, but boy i pissed him off, and take no pleasure in it.

Re: Patti Smith-Gimme Shelter

"Patti Smith was humble accepting her honor in the name of her late husband, MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith. But her performance was gutsier, moving from the "great anti-was song" 'Gimme Shelter' to 'Because the Night,' followed by 'Rock 'n' Roll N-----r.' "--Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY, Tuesday, March 13, 2007.

I love that Smith still causes contoversy. Even now, I have a 26-year-old friend who's favorite artist is Smith. He played her first album at a party last year and it caused a fight that ended up with some people walking out because they were so "offended." I was amazed to see a 30-year-old album still arouse such passion on both sides.

And I agree...'Trampin'' is a masterpiece. Why our own "Dunhill" (David Fricke, seen interviewing the New York Dolls on the documentary DVD that accompanies their new album) gave it 5-stars in MOJO magazine, and there's no one who's opinion I respect more than his.

Wow Beely, what's with the personal attack !?!?! (singling out one of my lines - cadaver - in your comment above) Let me ask you one f-ing thing.... Did you see Keith Richards last night? No , no you didn't. You saw a FAX of Keith on a TV screen and Computer monitor. You of all people should be hip to the hundred things they do in film, TV, HOLLYWOOD to make people look good (make-up, lighting, bald spot spray, hair pieces, hair extensions, plastic surgery, teeth work, etc etc etc) As David Lee Roth said famously about the girls in his CALIFORNIA GIRLS video "Those aren't women, those are art projects". Well, since you saw Keith as a FAX, after hours or days getting Hair and Make-up you have NO F-ING IDEA how he really looks without all the Xmas decorations". You ever been to an open casket funeral? Well, they do magic sometimes but it's an ILLUSION, the person is DEAD. They use TRICKS, same tricks they use on celebrities, MAN, enough said...what a surprise from you. As far as Patti Smith goes, you don't like her and some of us do - it's TASTE, you ain't right and we ain't wrong because IT'S ALL UP TO A MATTER OF TASTE, and nobody's is superior......Thanks Beely....Nice.......

i've never heard 'trampin' but i'm gonna give it a listen, ty jack knife.
mebbe i'm missing something...her performance and speeches last night did turn me off pretty bigtime, but i haven't heard that album, and given myself a chance with it...as i'd been turned off by her in the past...but maybe i'm cutting myself off from something good...i try to stay open...i have no trouble changing my opinion in a second if something really grabs me as authentic or fun...in fact, i would much prefer that be the case.
_________
in the original first thread on this year's hall of fame here, on page 3, i just gave my honest response as i was innocently watching the show in real time...i wasn't there gunning for patti or hoping she would aggravate me, believe me...i would have preferred to get knocked out all night long...the james brown and the ronettes footage had me in tears, seriously...it was that breathless...i was ready for a great show from start to finish...no expectations...but u can see my honest reaction as it happened there, and it's just one person's response...

you must be kidding...

yes

No , no you

ohboy, skelter where are we going with this?

right, i was watching on my computer...pretty good vid and audio...

uh, this is about patti smith's version of gimme shelter i thought...
and yeah, i sorta guessed with the trademark black eyeliner, hair dye and stuff that people get make up when they're on tv; keith wears it in the street sometimes too...

i've seen him look real good and real sick this last year...looks good to me...
whass this about? bashing keith's looks?

> You ever been to an open casket funeral?

yeah as a matter of fact...u sure u want to go there with me?

Well,

yeah, that's probably what the whole 'funeral' thing is about?

They use TRICKS, same tricks they

??
yeah they are dead and someone makes them look as nice as possible for family and loved ones...what r u surprised about? that i dug keith's look last night?
should stage artists and public figures not use makeup?
he was warm and personable and looked great to me. it was good to see him.
i like keith.

Hey Beelyboy,
How many times are you going to trash Patti Smith, each worste than the last?
You say you feel bad about giving an honest reaction and then just keep
bashing away...Interesting!

It is kinda funny that whatever people think of her performance that she was one of the only people up there, if not the only one, male or female, who doesn't die her naturally graying hair.

Re: Patti Smith-Gimme Shelter
Posted by: Beelyboy ()
Date: March 14, 2007 07:38

yeah that's always what i judge great art by; the color of someone's hair...
it's all about the hair...
yeh she had some gray in her hair. and a moustache...and probably hairy armpits too...that makes all the difference...now she sounds great; now her poetry is riveting!!!! ty for reminding me!!

that's why i keep 'bashing' her, rather than annoint her as is the custom...
because the critiques in her favor are often so naked lame angee...
stay tuned.

_______________________________________
oh angee, i dunno...i guess her fans feel like she hits something deep inside of them; she certainly has rabid fan base, and did since that first album...

but for me, it sounds like what i've described, if you look at my posts on this thread...some of which i have tried to edit so as not to offend her fans and my fellow posters...
...there's only been a couple of such posts, in contrast to so very many who adore her...but i'm gonna get 'trampin' and just let it flow one of these days...
probably not tomorrow or anything...but i'm not gonna miss a chance to be corrected and enlightened if that's what's in store for me.

why do you think so highly of her work and catalog?
does she reach you in a deep way, like morrison might have done, what with his mixture of poetry, politics and music etc...???
one thing that stirs passion in me about her is i feel she is posturing...especially in regard to her 'political activism' which i found pathetic and destructive...and setting herself up to be some sort of tv star activist...
but then jim had one of the best and most distinctive singing voices ever...
i dunno...i dunno...i don't care too much about patti smith...
patti smyth is good tho.

MADONNA !!!
