More complex chord progressions allow for less improvisation. Songs with one chord is probably the hardest to make interesting.

I can't believe how anyone can come away from this performance saying that they were not a live band. IMO the one thing I was so surprised about was just how good they sound with just the 4 piece set-up plus Billy. Again - Ringo is playing for real! One thing that alwasy mystefies me about old Beatles footage is how weird Ringo's drumming LOOKS. And John is playing his ass off.

Agreed, and also....it must be hard to make it swing well, and get an atmosphere, when the audience is 15 floors below. You don't feel the presence of the audience that way...and that's an important thing when playing "live".

I also wonder....is there any overdubs in this footage ? Sometimes I think the singing is "too great" for a such a windy roof-performance.

No overdubs, but some post mixing/production.

I have never heard of any overdubs regarding the rooftop concerts. You can clearly tell that studio mics isn't used as well. John, end especially Paul, used to be great live singers.
However, I have read that alot of the Shea concert was overdubbed or taken from the Hollywood Bowl concert that same year, 1965.

Too Odd-beat:
Yeah, you´re right, I forgot about this one. And this actually works live!
But I stick to the point that it´s an amazingly small election of new songs were in their sets at the time. "Rock´n Roll Music" was flogged to death for example. Lennon doesn´t really sound like what he´s singing about...

I agree that at that point they weren't very hot on stage anymore.

But I still think the BBC sessions and the Apple rooftop gig prove their ability as live musicians and singers... minstrels if you will!

According to this site Get Back is an edit of to different versions:

This third version which ended the concert should be 100 % live though. I actually think that the sound is more authentic too. There are some small but interesting differences between the versions.
