good one Tod....I saw him earlier that summer in NC.....did he have GE Smith with him?

yeah - GE was in the band from 1988 (start of NET) through most of 1990. It was a spotty period for Bob, but at this particular show, the band was tight as a drum. Interesting instrumental opener (only time ever done) - it's the same tune as Englebert's "Lonely is a Man Without Love" (which I assumed was the tune for many years)...until I saw a printed setlist years later which noted it as "L'air de La Lousianne"), a cover by a lesser known New Orleans artist. After reading Bob's auto-bio I realized that it must have been a reflection on Bob's recent stay in NO while he was recording Oh Mercy...he talks about this experience in detail in the book, of course. Anyway - the two tunes share the same melody and basic chord sequence...

thanks Tod....I too read Chronicles Vol. 1.......when I saw him in 1989 it was in a rather small amphitheater....and what I remember most about that show was an acoustic set in which he and GE did about 3 or 4 songs, just the two of them sitting on stools playing guitar and Bob crooning.....Man, that was beautiful.

yes - acoustic set at Berkeley:

Baby Let Me Follow You Down
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
Gates of Eden
Mr. T Man
Rank Strangers

Pogues opened the show, sans Shane, who didn't make it outta the bar
