Just getting a hold of this. What's the lineage, or how official is it? I pretty much like the perspective, though the roster of talking heads is a little thin, but the footage is great. I wish they had given the sources for the clips.
It was broadcasted by the French/German TV station ARTE in 2002 (I don't recall the exact broadcast date but it was before the beginning of the Licks Tour).
It's not an official documentary (unlike 25x5 for instance). The Stones camp had nothing to do with it (apart from making problems to Arte for having used Stones footage without right...)
it is a documentary by doro that is a famous austrian music video producer couple that have made a lot of videos for queen and also some for the voodoo lounge
Victor's rant is f'n insane. I didnt think it tied anything together, except for what it means to have your life revolve around a band. My life is not centered around the Rolling Stones. Their music is something I love, but not something I worship. He got into some religious themes as if to say the Stones are gods or worthy of such amazing adoration as would befit a god. BS. He's very enthousiastic though. I gotta give'im props for that.
I love the opening sequence. Dennis Leary's hilarious rant ("turn up the Stones!") followed by a breathtaking montage of Jumpin Jack Flash which almost leavs you breathless. What an opening.
Best Stones documentary ever.
Broadcast date on Arte was actually 14.7.02. 40 years almost to the day after the band's debut show. The English version has never been broadcast.
I remember a long time ago, I was flipping through channels on a lazy sunday and on one of the crappy religious channels that are like public access there was this show that was analyzing the themes of album covers from rock bands of the 60s, and first they took a look at the Sgt. Pepper cover and talked about all the satanist and anti-christian imagery that was in there.
Well sure enough, the next album they tried to tear apart was Their Satanic Majesties Request.
They talked about the hindi imagery present in it, and how Jagger represented some kind of demon or something.
It was really wild stuff. Of course then I finished my cup of Goats Blood and had to run, because I was late for my Wicca meeting!
?! Bockris doesn't say or imply that in the copy i have. granted, he's so worked up he's nearly inarticulate, but what he's struggling to convey is beautiful and true: "The Stones are priests - they are the only priests we have! ... We lived through a situation in the 40s when 100 million people got killed in like six years because of insane greed. And the Rolling Stones came along and [they] wiped out the hate and horror and fear that came after the Second World War, and they put something positive on the plate. They said: 'Hey!' They said: 'Let's have sex!'"
yep, they sure did! and what a strong and beautiful message it is - hear it for a thousand miles! :E
>> Is it on a boot DVD? <<
yes, it circulates on DVD, in one-disk mono versions and three-disk stereo versions.

I grabbed it from the newsgroups, alt.dvd.music or something. It was almost gone but might still be there. That way you don't have to depend on seeders. But I wouldn't have heard of it if not for postings here, so thanks ev'rybody!
The opening sequence grabbed me, too. I like that they included stu, and plenty of brian. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but one weakness might be that it never gets into any musical discussion beyond "influences," for example about brian and then keith's innovations and explorations as musicians. As a result, it actually seemed a little light on keith material, which is surprising for a latter-day documentary, now that keith has become the SoundbiteMaster. But maybe I skipped over a segment on open tunings and tape manipulation. Also I don't think there was any specific mention of one of my favorite stones years, '66. But overall it's thrilling.
