Stonestod,

CTI was an amazing label, with an excellent live album by the CTI Allstars from 1971.

CTI had George Benson record for them, before he descended into the smooth quagmire. Deodoto also did some good stuff on CTI, as did Chet Baker. Impulse, though, was absolutely fantastic.

I have never heard anything from Black Jazz, but will research it now.

Benson's returned to his "less-commercial" roots recently. He's headlining a jazz fest i'm going to later in the year...hoping for a little more "wes" and a little less "manilow"....

listening to a rudolph johnson record from the black jazz label right now...excellent stuff....i think the label only put out 25 or so records...all of them first-rate....

Stonestod,

The trouble with Benson was that he made Breezin, which was the beginning of the smooth nightmare. Benson worked with Miles on Miles In The Sky, and he also appeared on Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff albums, which show an excellent jazz man. Giblet Gravy and his cover of White Rabbit are excellent.

The story is that Benson, a Jehovah's Witness, didn't twig what White Rabbit was about, thinking, correctly, that it was a cross between Ravel's Bolero and Sketches of Spain, and that he had no idea that Grace Slick had written a song extolling drug use.

I cannot abide, however, Benson's cover of This Masquerade, though it did bring in some royalties for Leon Russell. What annoys me, also, is that Breezin had some great musicians on it, i.e Phil Upchurch and Al Foster, yet it was one of the smoothest drab albums ever released.

Hey - can you hear me now
As I fade away
And lose my ground
Maybe you'd like to know
What I'd have to say
If I was still around
Now I'm made of smoke
You see through me
It's the strangest joke
Can't touch the Invisible Man
Can't stop the Invisible Man
Why did the lights go down
Or onto someone new
Well let them learn
I used to own this town
Now I'm watching you
Now it's my turn
Now I'm made of mist
Will you know
When you've been kissed
Can't touch the Invisible Man
Can't stop the Invisible Man
Now I'm almost free
Disappearing
Don't cry for me
Can't touch the Invisible Man
Can't stop the Invisible Man
