Hal Alshby/lets spend the night together

Im a big fan of this movie. One of my favorite parts is Hang Fire. at the begining mick does this thing with his leg like hes starting a motorcycle and he starts shouting "ahhhhhhhhhhhhh". brilliant. I wonder if he just made that up on the fly at that show or if He had done it before. That move seems authentic. I dont think it was something planned out before the first time he used it.

Yeah--that's the scene where Ronnie has a beer in his hand and Mick starts tapping his watch in a fairly animated manner--classic stuff, great movie.

great movie indeed.
at the time of "still live" and when the movie came out,
i thought that they are sooo old, but still rock.
that's 24 years ago today...

Great movie. The opener Under my Thumb ................. boy I wish they'd use that again any time soon. That rocked !!! I could watch that opening time and time again and never be bored. Pure magic.

the 81 life version - especialy keith guitar blasting out after
the glenn miller intro -was a real killer.
it was quite succesful in discoteques at that time -
i always enjoyed it, when inbetween all the crap, they played
that number - and the floor was cooking!
doubtless i played a perfectly good air guitar eveytime...

First of all, twanghound, it was Duke Ellington, not Glen Miller. With that said.. it's my favorite movie of all time!! I grew up watching it 5 times a day. We'd recorded it from some crappy telivision broadcast and everyday I'd actually play the tape and I'd pretend I was Mick Jagger. Yeah I know what you're thinking, he's a nutcase. Well, some kids play cowboy, can I play Mick Jagger?!~

I love every minute of this film. The best part is the first part in the outdoor stadium. It's completely filled with people and they have great shots flying over that stadium, with the sunset in the background. The music is great, no back-up singers or horn section, only a piano player, keyboard player, a saxophone player and the Stones. I love it when Ronnie and Keith do back-up vocals. Please go back to that line up!!

So that's why I'm a big fan of the '81 tour. I've got loads of photos of it in my room.. loads of bootlegs.. it's awesome!!

Yeah and there's even a shot of Charlie drinking beer on stage.

I got the video tape in August 1990 the day I returned from the Berlin concert. Still had the feeling of last nicht's concert, so I decided to wait some days before wathcing the video. Then I played it and was suprised how much Keith had moved in 1981 compared to 1990. But all in all it's great stuff to watch even though most songs are cut. Large energy, all time rocking, rough sound and great looks!

Going back, its interesting to see how relaxed the movie was shot compared to the frenetic pace of constantly changing images they show in concert movies today. Its one flaw was a shortage of close-ups of the band, and the weird montages that had nothing to do with the music...but I'd take that over crap today.

The opening scene is one of the alltime greats. Behind the stage activity, gearing up for "Under My Thumb", opening curtains and the enormous gulf of people appears....beautiful filmshot.

Never liked the tour all that much, except for the lineup (Mac & Stu on keys), & the grunge. Thought Ernie Watts, a talented player, seemed to overplay. Wood freebasing. Jagger huffing & puffing, has been way better vocally & as a performer since then - in better shape. Looks better too. And tho I havent seen it in several years, weren't many of the songs edited a la Still Life (no surprise there)? Asheby had a serious drug problem & sharply declined (& died) not long after this film & maybe one or 2 more.

hal ashby collapsed during the stones tour.
he had serious alcohol and drug problems.
he died of cancer in 88.

I had never heard of Hal Ashby befor his association with the Stones... other than this movie and his directing the "Waiting on a Friend" video, I don't know of his other stuff.

I could have done without Jagger taking his shirt off and wiping his ass during the movie. The movie is 25 years old, but you can still tell that Jagger has always thought his sh-t doesn't stink.

My favourite sec. here is when Ronnie runs around the stage (you know, the stage is visable from all sides), and Keith stops playing untill he comes back, from the other direction.
Also when Ronnie jump on Mick's back, and Mick throwes him away. Looks like a move Mick have learned from his bodyguards.

best scene for me : Ronnie put a cigarette on the floor to begin a guitar solo, and naturally Keith take it immediatly !

The Hal Ashby Movie shown in the cinemas was named "Rocks Off", a few weeks later you could rent "Rocks Off" - VHS tapes.

A little later "When The Wip Comes Down" was removed from that movie, the VHS was renamend and went to stores as "Time Is On Our Side" in US and as "Let's Spend The Night Together" in the Rest of the world. These version we can now find as DVD.

But what's the real reason they removed "When The Wip Comes Down"?

I knew that, HighwireC. I've been looking for a bootleg DVD of Rocks Off. I wonder why they removed it too.. probably just too long.

Another question: is that outdoor part from Phoenix? I just got the soundboards and it's the same sound.

ANd they added some "historical" stuff, like pictures from the Rolling-Stones childhood and some more like that. But why?

Ok, thanks for the quick response. It's cool to have that soundboard in my collection. Where's the indoor part from?
