Any pic with the (newly appeared) Skulls Guitar??
Posted by: bruno ()
Date: March 8, 2006 11:57

Hi all. I've read some reviews of the LA Forum gig and somebody noted that Keith plays again his "Skulls and Daggers" Zemaitis guitar. Are there any Keith pic playing this one?? Is this a modern copy, innit??

How about pics of Keith leaning on Mick's shoulder during his Midnight Rambler solo? That was a great moment -- has he been doing this at other shows?

Can't help with the Zeamaitis, but this was just posted @ RO by Harold Colson aka Stoneslib, LA Forum, Inglewood, CA - March 6, 2006. Looks like a single pick-up MR type of guitar

there was a thread on shidoobee about Keith's new Zemaitis recently:

Involving three forums, then, Mathijs has given som clues about this white guitar in this Rocks Off thread: [novogate.com]

Edited: Check www.suprousa.com and here it is the very own guitar:

A Supro Ozark mode, with the following description from the manufacturer's own website: "Single cutaway, single bridge pickup. Our NEW Supro® pickups are a humbucking version of the old Supro single coils (sounds like a P90, looks like an old Supro or covered humbucker). Vintage Bakelite knobs for Volume and Tone. VERY lightweight basswood body, 2 piece quartersawn maple neck & rosewood fretboard with dot inlays. Masterbuilt in USA featuring finest USA made parts (pickup, bridge, machine heads, wood, etc.). 25" scale. 50s V neck profile. Real nitrocellulose lacquer finish".

Its esthethic (sp?) reminds me of those old National and those kind of old 50's brands guitars.

wow, thank you Bruno honey! have some extra popcorn.

>>VERY lightweight basswood body <<

that interests me right away - Keith's back hurts, so a lightweight guitar must feel good for a change.
how many numbers did he use this one for? (sorry, that information's no doubt been posted already, but i've gotten behind on my reading.)

Keith's back hurting can be one of the reasons why he plays the "Fat-Bottomed Hollowbody Gibsons" for standard tuning nowadays, instead Les Pauls, then??

Dear Bruno,

That somethig wrong here, super SHIDOOB said that Keith's guitar was burned in th Redlands fire, but that's wrong (Redlands burded in 1971-72) Keith played with this guitar in 1975 and 1976....!

umm ... i don't know who you're quoting here, but: the fire that Keith's original Macabre was supposedly destroyed in was in Los Angeles,
just after the 78 tour. (Keith had that guitar on the 78 tour as well, not just 75/76).

the incorrect notion that Macabre was destroyed in a fire at Redlands has spread from a website that has a replica of the guitar for sale.
there's been more than one fire at Redlands ("the joint's combustible!") but the big one was in 1973;
Keith didn't even own that guitar then. anyway it seems that in fact the guitar wasn't destroyed at all, but was stolen,
perhaps when the Stones were in New York for the 1978 Saturday Night Live shoot.

most of those details are also in the thread on shidoobee that i posted the link to, if you read through it ...

I have shots of KR with that guitar, from Cleveland in '78.
So it was used during that tour as well.

As I understand now, Keith used the Zemaitis for Sway.

By the way, the story about Keith's back runs now for most than 20 years, but it never went any further than unproven gossip. I actually don't believe it. And, most guitars are all in the same weight range. His Strats and Tele's will be around 6.5 to 7 pounds, the Tele custom will be closer to 9 pounds, and his Gibsons will also hit the 9 pound mark. The ES-355 serie's is by no means a light guitar, they often are heavier than real 50's or Historic Les Pauls.

I always assumed that the semi-hollowbody ES-355s would be lighter than any LP, Mathijs. It's true that top-end LPs seem to be the lighter aones, but I'd never imagine that they could be lighter than a semi-hollow. Interesting info, anyway.

BTW, it seems there are no pics from this weekl's LA Forum gig with the Zemaitis, then. Stoneslib, With Sssoul,... anybody?

Bruno honey, i too am pining to see a shot of Keith with the new Zemaitis.
and Mathijs, thank you for the continued fascinating input. i didn't know there was any "gossip" about Keith's back hurting -
my observation that it hurts is just that: an observation. i don't mean it's some kind of Major Big Deal,
but it seems pretty plain in a lot of the concert footage from around 92 onward.
maybe i notice little telltale signs because i've got some training in therapy for that kind of thing.

anyway these weighty issues are really interesting! so ... so have some popcorn, everybody. :E

No pics. Professional photographers stick around for the first song, then they leave. We'll have to wait for an amateur shot DVD.. if there's gonna be one.

Well, the semi-acoustic do have a quite large solid block of wood in the middle, and they are bigger than standard solid body guitars. Most vintage ES-335 to 355's that I have held were as heavy as a standard Les Paul, and all modern ES-335's to 355's are heavier than my Historic '59 LP. I once had a 1961 Gibson ES-345, and that was absolutely the best sounding guitar I ever had. Unfortunately, the neck was too thin for my hands, so I sold it to the rythm player in my old band. To hear that guitar roar through an old Ampeg VT-40 was brilliant!

yeah, people seem to be saying he played the new Supro on Respectable and a few other numbers, and the new Zemaitis on Sway.
true that professional photographers only have limited permission/access, but i'm still hoping for an audience shot of that new Zemaitis -
so far all the amateur shots i'm seeing are of the b-stage, though.
