improved drum sound

I think the sound guys are doing a better job of capturing Charlie Watts drumming on the ABB tour compared to the licks tour. This time it really sounds like a solid WHACK!!! when he hits the beat. On the licks tour, it sounded more like a "thud" or "dunk, dunk" kind of sound. "Neighbors" and "Everybody Needs somebody to love" on Live Licks is a good example of this. I also think a solid "Whack" upside the head once in a while can be a good thing

i agree with ya on the drum tone.....but imo the soundpeople have this need to make the drums (especially the kick-drum) too loud.......irritating........way outta balance

Yes Reptile, it is amazing to think he was going through chemo not to long ago, and now hes come back strong

leanord, I dont know anything about drums, thats just something i observed does focusing on the foot drum cause the problem I described, or is that a seperate issue?

That' what I hear from my few ABB boots too. The sound on the drums doesn't collapse as much as on Licks.

Yes, I agree, and I think that it corresponds to the great drumming Charlie does on ABB. I never heard him sounding better both in interpretaion and sound quality.

Funny you should say that, LK - from where I was sitting at MSG on 1/18 (Keith's side, midcourt, up in the rafters), I could barely hear Charlie at all.

That said, from watching that show on DVD as well as Rio, it's pretty obvious that Charlie is playing like a man possessed this tour. In addition to his usual solid self, he's just beating the snot out of the drums in a way I've never heard him do before. Especially at the end of most songs - I love those little flourishes he does.

I've never seen him smile so much, either - he's having a blast. "Good to be here, good to be anywhere", indeed.

Go Charlie Boy.
