Your favourite soul acts??
Date: February 8, 2006 21:25

Hi guys, I'm a massive soul music fan, and would have to say that one of my favourite all time acts along with the Stones is Marvin Gaye. Love almost everything he ever released, and strongly believe that he has just about the best voice I have ever heard.

I also love Stevie Wonder, Otis, Al Green, Temptations, Four Tops, O-Jays, Smokey Robinson and Sam Cooke among others.

I also really rate contemporary r&b/soul acts such as John Legend, Ashanti, Joe and Musiq.

Just interested to hear what anyone elses favourite acts are?

Sam Cooke is God! Irma Thomas is THEE woman, and classy = Maxine Brown. Also love most of the aforementioned. Huge fan of sixties Stax.

Stevie Wonder is one of my favorite artists. "Talking Book", "Innervisions", "Music of my mind","Hotter than july" and "Key of life" are absolutely perfect records. Marvin Gaye is a good one too. Otis Reddings Monterey festival version of "Tenderness" is outstanding! Don't forget Merry Clayton's Gimme Sheltersmiling smiley

you're killing me tat2you. I actually saw Otis Day and "the Animal House Band" (not "the Knights") perform at my college for a toga party in the gymnasium. It was a hoot.

quick Otis Day & Knights trivia question:

In the Animal House movie - who played bass in the band?

Alex, I'll say, "Who is Stanley Clarke, for a $100"

How about Robert Cray???

I used to live virtually across the street from the club in the movie, The Dexter Lake Club. That is what it really was called. It is about 15 miles outside of Eugene, Oregon. One day I saw the Universal Studio trucks there and walked over and watched them film some segments for "Animal House".

Robert Cray is the correct answer.

I also lived in Eugene at the time and watched some of the filming.

T&A, remember back then it seemed that The Robert Cray Band would play in some club about every other weekend in Eugene?

saw him often - Taylors, The Place, The Harvester (opened for Hooker there once) among other places. I caught him opening for Muddy in Portland in 1980 the Euphoria Tavern - remember that joint? Friends I went with weren't impressed with Cray and said he would never even be as big as the Siegel-Schwall band. History has proven those friends very, very wrong I'm happy to say.

Most probably know the story of how the Blues Brothers were borne out of the Animal House production by way of Cray's partner-in-crime, Curtis Salgado...

CURTIS MAYFIELD is deep in my heart. I think he's one great influence for MICK.

I definitely think Mick patterns his falsetto after Mayfield....

"Siegel-Schwall" band: Man, I haven't heard that name in about 30 years!!

they have been forgotten, haven't they. Corky is still pretty active - he's done some cross-over work in symphonies. The band reformed a few years back and did a so-so live album. But, in their hey-day the were pretty damned good. Jimmy Schwall played acoutic guitars exclusively, but you'd swear you were listening to an electric sometimes...
