Check this out: A 1967 BBC documentary and roundtable discussion with Mick Jagger, a Professor Psychology at Manchester University, and a moderator. They discuss crowd behavior. Jagger is very eloquent on the subject of audiences and how he feels when he's performing.
There is also some good Stones concert footage. It's a half hour long, and the first five minutes show bizarre scenes of Nazi Nuremburg ralleys and the like, but if you have the time, check it out:
